I really need a quick response

As a major grade, my class had to create a considerable amount of bibliographic cards on certain subjects using only the school library. And well, within a few days before due date, many, I guess, procrastinators, including myself, rushed to get it done. The thing is, our teacher basically told us to look for books ourselves, that we could tell other’s where to find some books, but not hand them ours. And well, other people picked out many books and left them on various tables. By the time I started my bibliorgaphic cards, just about, if not all, the books I needed were already there for me and other’s to use. I along with others thought it was great and asked the librarians if they could leave them out for our use and they agreed. We commented amongst ourselves about how easy it would be now, with the books there, and if our teacher knew that they were already there. We often swapped books and went form table to table looking and asking for books. I admit I felt like we were helping each other but at the same time I had a tiny thorn in my conscience. I didn’t think too much of it at the time, since everybody was doing it, but now, the night before it’s due, I’m feeling guilty. This is a major grade and I have half the mind to tell my teacher about this and accept whatever comes.

Any thoughts? This is rather urgent. 😦

Sounds like a bunch of busywork if you ask me. If the teacher didn’t want something like this going on she should have established that up front with the librarian.

Now, was the point of the assignment to learn how to use the library? Or was it to actually gather information.

If it was the first, then you probably didn’t learn as much as you could have.

That’s something we were talking about as well. It seems rather useless, but supposedly (sp?) we are to use only those books for which we have note cards on a future major essay or something.

why not just the internet:shrug:

nevertheless, it still bother’s me. I don’t want to get a high grade when I feel I should get a rather low one…especially since it could drastically change my grade.

oh and my teacher is a ‘he’.

 🤷 😦

What age are you? And what was the intent behind the exercise?

I would mention to the teacher what you have told us here.

You still had to do all the hard work of using the books, so even if he marks you down, it won’t be by a huge amount, and he probably will just be impressed with your honesty.👍

Well that was yesterday, so what did you end up doing? Did he tell you how to make and use the index cards? I am surprised that you could all use the same books. Apparently he did not assign different topics to each student. Not a good thing if he really wanted you all to learn how to research and set up a paper or essay.

Well since all the books were on the table what else could you do?

I descided to talk to my teacher about it and he said it was okay.

sigh finally over:D

sigh now to tackle the essays…

As a teacher, that’s what I would have said. Good luck with the essays.

This kind of busy work ever ends by the way. Even in law school I had to do some scavenger hunt which took lat least 6-8 hours of my useful time just to learn how to use the law library hard copy and westlaw and lexisnexis (much more convenient) on the internet. Tecnically it was worth 10 credit/no credit points but since law school is curved it really is worthless if everyone gets the 10 points so it sucked and you wouldn’t be in law school if you aren’t a serious student so of course everyone did it. The same regulations were given to us with similar situations. Basically the rule I think applied is if I first went to the area where I was supposed to find the book and it was missing, then it would be alright to take it from whereever it was. However, if I saw the book lieing around or knew someone had it I would still try to find the area of the library where I was supposed to find it and I likely had to do the research to figure out this was the book I needed anyways.

Hi SV7 it sounds like you worked too hard on this one, you should had just employed the electric or card catalog. It would have been a lot faster and easier.
