I know that cheating is considered as stealing.

Is cheating on an exam is different from cheating on a quiz?

For example, the quiz is economics and needs to find the elasticity such like that, then this man computed the mathematical equations by himself and in the end a graph should be shown.

But this man didn’t know how the graph looks like so he asked his classmate about how the graph looks like then his classmate showed him the answer (graph) and copied the graph.

Is copying just the graph consitutes grave matter?

Good morning, i think cheating is cheating. Whether it is a grave sin I would not think so but it is wrong.
This may lead to other things in ones life, if they start by cheating on a quiz they may think it’s alright to do things that may lead to a grave sin… It sounds like this person knows right from wrong If it lays heavy on their heart, tell them to talk to the teacher. I will say a prayer for them. God Bless you…

By the way, with my whole heart, I was the one who copied, I just told here in the 3rd person. 🙂 Thanks for the insight. I’m just worrying if I comitted a mortal sin.

Arnold, what you told me, it’s alright… God knows you are sorry. that’s what counts. If you want to tell your teacher, if that will help you, if you cannot, your heart is in the right place. You are a good person, always remember if you do your best, that’s what counts… I will remember you in my prayers. Take care and God Bless you.

Why are there so many people asking about frivolous matters and then making it into a debate on a spiritual level ?

Cheating is cheating, no matter to what degree. No other way to put it.

Sorry I do not consider it a frivolous matter when a young person reaches out. He evidently took the matter seriously or he would not have brought it up. It’s not a debate, God wants us to help one another God bless

Cheating is more like lying than stealing. It is an offense against the truth. It is just as if you told the teacher “I figured out this graph,” or told the Dean “I follow our school’s code of honor.” Also at some level you are deceiving yourself.

At this stage, I wouldn’t judge it as a mortal sin, but you can figure that out. Go over the three conditions, which briefly are:
  • grave matter
  • full knowledge
  • deliberate consent
In either case, go to Confession and sin no more.

Apart from the question of sin, it is also a matter of prudence that you should not cheat. In the long run, getting a graph wrong on a quiz, test, or exam will be of little consequence. Why do you go to school? Is it just to get a good grade and a diploma? For your own success and happiness, make school about learning – learning the subject matter, learning what it’s good for, learning how to think, and learning how to live well.

Not necessarily helpful for a struggling young person dealing with guilt. Cheating is always wrong…yes… but cheating on a weekly quiz is not equivalent to cheating on one’s medical exams and illegally obtaining a medical degree. The OP didn’t ask if cheating on a quiz was wrong. The OP knew it was and evidently felt guilty. The OP wanted to know if it was grave matter. That’s something that we are all called to discern every time we fall… something the Church instructs us to learn how to discern.
Of course, it is best to discuss with a priest if in doubt.

His actions are a grave matter to those students who studied hard & did not cheat.
