One of my best friends is cheating on her boyfriend. Infact I would say she is a serial cheater. Because she has a long distance relationship her boyfriend has no idea about it. I have confronted her and she is insistent on not telling him. The thing is they are planning on getting engaged by next year. Is it appropriate for me to tell her boyfriend what has happened? I think he deserves to know what he is entering into

Tell your friend that if she wont tell him then you are going to, because doing otherwise would go against your conscience.
How about giving your friend an ultimatum? Its far the best if she faces up to the responsibility her self.
Seems she does not know what LOVE is. Try to make her ponder what qualities she would like in her future husband and make her realise that she should work on making herself ready for the dream guy she probably wishes to have.

Grace 👍 Ps. If she is secular be really gentle.

if they are not engaged or married, there is no cheating, because there is not and cannot be any exclusive relationship. She may be manipulating the men in her life, and being dishonest with those she dates, or communicates with long distance, but she is not cheating. If this hypothetical lady (I am not talking about a specific person here) is having sex with any of these men, she is fornicating, but not cheating. she may also have relationship problems if she confides in a 3rd party, but not in the man she professes to care about enough to become engaged to him. the third party has no role here, except to advise her accurately on the morality of actions she is contemplating or committing, and then only when she asks for advice or invites comment.

What a bunch of bogus… excuse me but it certainly is.
Tell me Annie, the day before you got engaged … if your boyfriend had then been with another girl, telling her he loved her, kissing her or whatever… would you then not have felt he was CHEATING on you and did you not think that your relationship at that point was exclusive? Come on! of course you did.

If you are in a serious relationship with someone and you have a certain level of commitment through words and actions and physical nearness, then surely you can be in a exclusive relationship where you should be able to count on each other, even though you have not yet made formal vows.
Saying otherwise is just… I mean… where do you come up with this kind of thing?
What kind of talk is this to give young people who are supposed to learn to take care of other peoples hearts ?.. I shake my head at you, I really do 😦

Another thing to keep in mind is that you should not make a new (Catholic) vocabular where you put your own interpretation into certain expressions that everyone else in the rest of the society take to mean something else than you do…

Call it whatever you want, but I am sure the boyfriend would think of it as a breach of trust and improper conduct in consideration of a relationship.

Puzzleannie, there’s a lot of point in what you say about the fundamental difference between marriage and a relationship. On the other hand, I’m not sure that being dishonest in premarital relationships comes down to a simple breach of trust.

I wouldn’t agree so easily with the idea that one should merely suggest that such behaviour is dishonest and then leave it be, either. If I were unknowingly engaged to someone treating me like that behind my back, I would be very grateful for having it shown to me. In fact, such behaviour casts doubt on the validity of any potential subsequent marriage and in the face of that, I don’t think we ought to stay silent. I would probably tell.

I think puzzleannie’s comment is right on when we set our minds back to what the courting mentality is all about (which the courting mentality is by far filled with more respect of self and others because one is OPEN about the fact that they are spending time getting to know a multitude of those of the opposite sex through group outings and phone/email conversations and only when each person agrees to be exclusive - to pursue a courting relationship - will all other getting to know someone of the opposite sex, cease to exist). But, if this friend had not stated to this young man that she is seeking to know other young men until she wants to become exclusive with just one (court), then yes, she needs to be corrected and needs to grow up and be open and honest to herself first, and then to the young many she claims will be her fiance one day.

Hi!

Jesus said: So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
(The New International Version), If you apply that to this question you will find you can only get one answer. Is that not true?

May the Spirit of Jesus lead you.

Can we first define what you mean by “cheating”?

kissing, touching inappropriately, and who knows what else when no one else is around.

Ive been told to not meddle in her affairs because I only know him through her. I’m worried that if I do say anything I will ruin a friendship, but at the same time, I wouldn’t want to stay friends if her behavior continues. If after he finds out, he is still willing to persue a relationship with her, I will be their number 1 supporter.

Gmarie, respectfully, I believe exclusive/non-exclusive isn’t the perfect way to put it. So far as it comes to going to coffee, talking on the phone or the Internet and so on, there’s no need for that to be exclusive, since we do that with friends as well. However, when it comes to things which belong to love of a different character from charity, those things should not be non-exclusive or else we fall into polygamous patterns. Having multiple concurrent romantic relationships is polygamous and it creates vain hopes in people. It’s a modern trend to accept that, but it’s nowhere in the Fathers or Saints for all I know.

Bollix! There is no commitment of exclusivity, thus there is no “cheating.”

I guess I go by the idea of true courting and all that that entails. There are plenty of Catholic books on the subject and the whole idea makes a lot of sense instead of the stupid (imho) concept of serial dating that occurs in today’s society.

I think concurrent is worse than serial. Let me just explain that I don’t mean one shouldn’t meet many people, go to coffee, have a walk, have a conversation, you know. But friendship is enough for that. Once it starts involving kissing, declarations of life, some more overt or serious flirting, then it’s wrong in my opinion to do that with many people. It’s also wrong to do that with someone for a limited period of time, then with another, then with yet another. Moreover, there is no actual need to have someone for kissing and hugging and love letters at all times.

100% agree

I think that unless you are privy to the details of exactly what understanding exists between your friend and her boyfriend about what they will and will not do with other people when apart, you need to mind you own business. This is a non-engaged, long distance relationship, not a marriage. I agree one owes honesty and honorable behaviour even in a non-marital dating relationship~but you do not know what the expectations are. If you are uncomfortable with the details your friend provides about her dating escapades, ask her to keep them to herself. She’ll get the hint.

Maybe not any physical infidelity, but obviously the woman is lying to her boyfriend and leading him on while receiving the benefits of another relationship. Perhaps that second guy is in the same boat!

Why don’t you try fish out from him where he thinks the relationship stands? I suppose what one thinks is acceptable is more or less up to what the individual thinks is acceptable, and not so much what you find acceptable. I’d say for myself, if there were plans on a possible engagment, I’d be rather upset at a friend not telling me. Life’s a bit too short to be getting played the fool for longer you need to.

I don’t know. Logically, until a commitment is made, well, there is no commitment, therefore, no cheating. Just my opinion.

So it’s ok for someone in a relationship, to do anything, no matter what as long as there is no “committment”? How do you explain to someone" it’s ok…you aren’t engaged…so your BF/GF can do anything they want until there is a ring"??? I am not sure I understand this.No ring + No committment = no cheating??
