You shall not commit adultery.
But I say to you,
everyone who looks at a woman with lust
has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
If your right eye causes you to sin,
tear it out and throw it away.
It is better for you to lose one of your members
than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna.
And if your right hand causes you to sin,
cut it off and throw it away.
It is better for you to lose one of your members
than to have your whole body go into Gehenna

If Jesus advocates maiming ourselves if its in the best interest of our salvation, would that include taking chemicals that reduce testosterone? Could this apply particuarly to someone who might be called to the priesthood?

I don’t mean to make fun of your question, but if you read Jesus literally, do you realize how many one-armed one-eyed enuchs we would have walking around today?

Muslims in Afghanistan stoned a man and woman today for adultery. Apparently, hands are also removed when children are caught stealing.

The intent of what Jesus said, was to convey that sin is so dangerous to your soul that you must consider where sin initially takes root. To be willing to suffer great sacrifice so that you avoid even the near occasion of sin.

Just like weeding a garden, get the weeds out when they are seedlings.

Don’t wait until they are ten feet tall, full of seeds and overtaking your vegetables.

Chastity is developed through practice.

All persons are called to chastity. Young adults, dating adults, preCana couples, same sex attracted people, married couples practicing natural family planning, nuns, brothers, priests, divorced people.

There are many paragraphs in Scripture concerning the development of habits that keep a person from sin:

2 Cor 12.9

““My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me.”

2 Peter 1:3-10

"His divine power has bestowed on us everything that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and power. Through these, He has bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that through them you may come to share in the divine nature, after escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire.

“For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion, devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love. If these are yours and increase in abundance, they will keep you from being idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Anyone who lacks them is blind and shortsighted, forgetful of the cleansing of his past sins.”

My favorite:

Romans 5:3

“Not only that, but we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy Spirit that has been given to us. For Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the appointed time for the ungodly.”

The church allows the use of medicines, even “contraceptives”, when they treat a disease, such as severe hormonal imbalances, as long as the intention is to treat the disease, not interfere with conception. I’d imagine chemical castration could fall under this category if the illness in question warrants such treatment.

As chemical castration is most infamously known for treating severe severe urges to commit rape or sexual assault, it is unlikely that such a person would be accepted as physically and mentally fit for the priesthood.

As a married woman familiar with the male sex drive, I have often thought that if I were a 20 something single man, I’d go on an anti-depressant known to decrease sex drive. One little pill and all those occasions of sin would disappear… Just one of my crazy thoughts…

I am not trying to criticize anyone who really needs medical help because of a recognized, diagnosed illness -

But doesn’t anyone else find it a bit “repugnant” to change one’s natural makeup just to try to help cope with the natural urges we are all born with?
