A high-profile Australian television anchor for the Chinese Government’s English news channel, CGTN, has been detained in Beijing in a highly sensitive case posing a fresh challenge to Australia-China relations.

Key points:​

• Friends became concerned when Cheng Lei did not reply to messages in recent weeks
• Ms Cheng has not been charged but is being held under what is called “residential surveillance at a designated location”
• Ms Cheng’s two young children are with family members in Melbourne and the family has issued a statement

CGTN as stated here, is actually the Chinese Global Television Network, it is Chinese Government State-Sponsored news, it is at youtube and honestly, I don’t think it’s all bad generally as far as that goes. So, she worked /works for them. This is interesting.

Buzzfeed has done an extensive investigation using satellite imagery to identify the massive network of re-education camps that have been built in the western province of Xinjiang by the Chinese Communist Party. Some of these camps are truly massive in scale, large enough to hold 10,000 people.

Initially, the re-educations of Muslim minorities in the region took place at repurposed schools but since 2018, China has built hundreds of new structures which look almost identical to prisons:

The scale of some of these compounds can be deduced by carefully measuring and counting windows to see how many stories a given building has. At least one camp is now large enough to hold 40,000 people.

Like that Lebron James fellow, quick to criticize the US, silent on things like this. Or some might criticize Francis Graham… for something that probably wasn’t wrong to begin with, how about on something like this?

She has been in detention since mid August. There are many foreign language journalists working at the state run media station there. That is not unusual.

Australia and her family are being very cautious in any response to this as it could be seen as a tit for tat on the current Australia vs China diplomatic issues.
