I was curious what other people thought about chewing gum during a fast.

On Fridays, I’m trying to do a complete fast from food until 3:00pm, but I frequently feel the need to be chewing on something when I’m hungry.

I’ve never really thought about it, and my gut reaction is that it isn’t cheating since it’s just gum and you’re not eating it, but I was hoping to get some opinions from others.

Fasting completely from food is far more than the Church requires.

You should have your physician’s okay before you do this.

After that, because this is not part of a required fast, there is no such thing as “cheating” on it. You simply decide to chew gum and not eat solid food between morning and 3 PM.

I know it’s more than the Church requires, I’m giving it a shot and seeing how it goes. If I find it’s too much or is making me feel unwell then I’ll stop.

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut ^^

I see no problem with it. Gum isn’t meant to be swallowed, and it can’t satisfy hunger. I’d say it’s little different from brushing your teeth.
