Hey Chicago area folks!..

If you’ve always been curious about Byzantine Catholicism but were hesitant to just “show up” at a Byzantine Catholic church on a Sunday morning, here’s an ideal, non-threatening and FUN opportunity to ease your way into an understanding of Eastern Catholicicm!!

On Saturday, August 16th, Annunciation Byzantine Catholic parish in Homer Glen, Illinois will be hosting the first annual Prairie Fest on the parish grounds. Although this festival is designed to celebrate the parish’s much-lauded efforts at restoring their magnificent and highly recognized church grounds to their natural prairie state, this festival also offers an ideal way to satisfy your curiosity about Eastern Catholicism in general! In addition to the standard church festival fare of food and music there will be PLENTY of Byzantine Catholics available to answer your questions about Byzantine Catholic theology and liturgical life. You’ll be able to attend a guided tour of the magnificent church building and, undoubtedly, even meet Fr. Thomas Loya, the parish’s nationally and internationally known pastor (and iconographer of the awesome iconography you’ll see inside!). This is a wonderful way to introduce yourselves to Eastern Catholicism, make new friends (by the way, Byzantines make GREAT friends! 😃 ) and give yourself that excuse you’ve been looking for to come back on Sunday for Divine Liturgy!

The festival will run from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 16th. Visit the parish’s website for more details and directions…

SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT!

My band, Harvest Moon, will be entertaining from noon until 3:00… stop by and say “hi!” I’ll be the dude with the white goatee on his chin and mandolin in his hands! I’m hopin’ to meet a LOT of you CAF-ers out there! In fact, maybe we all ought to wear CAF name tags so we’ll know who each other is! 😉

Hope to see y’all out there!!

Is Homer Glen a Northern Suburb or one of those far west ones?

Should we make this formal? Should a group of us plan to meet up?

I just joined this forum. So this is just my 2cents

I would definitely go to learn more about Byzantine Catholics.

I formally changed my rite from RC to join the Ukranian Catholic Chruch in 1987.I love the Divine Liturgy, the whole aproach to spirituality, the humility of the responses(especially the prayers that the priest says).

When you go to Divine Liturgy just listen the first time(if its in English,of course) and watch the actions of the priest.

Go again and concentrate on the words being said by the people.
Then go again and concentrate on the words beng said by the priest. They will bring tears to your eyes!!!

Just an interesting sidelight…try going to confession.Same format as RC;same act of contrition, etc.

BUT,keep in mind that when the priest gives uyou absolution he(in God’s name,of course) is not only absolving you of the sins you confessed but also all the sins of your past life whether you remembr them or have lhonestly have forgotten to confess them!!

Yours in Christ,
Tom

This sounds like a lot of fun! I never thought I would miss living in Chicago, but now I do. :o

Chicago is a great town for Eastern Catholic Churches - from Annunciation to Sts. Volodymyr and Olha or St. Nicholas Cathedral in Ukrainian Village, to Romanian Catholic parishes in Aurora, to various others like Syro-Malankar, Maronite, etc. it is a rich town to experience various Eastern Churches.

Tom - glad your experience has been a joyful one since joining the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

n.b. Maybe sometime we could get an Eastern Catholic version of Winfield up sometime. angelfire.com/ks/boysoftheprairie/

yes ,my experience to change rites has been extremely rewarding.

I did not do this lightly 20 plus years ago.

I used the guidance of my Latin rite confessor:a 75 year old scholar/priest and chaplin to a cloistered monastery (I was his altarboy) PLUS plenty of spiritual and historical reading and lots of praying to the Holy Spirit.

Anyone who is visiting the Philadelphia/SE PA/DE area contact me and I’ll be happy to take you toa Ukranian Church Church.

Here’s the link I use when I travel to find Ukranian Catholic Churches:catolicos.org/ukrcatholicchurch.htm

As has been mine as well with the UGCC. I had attended Eastern parishes since high school, but did not do the official “transfer of ritual churches” until much later, roughly the same time as yours. Back then it had to be done through the Pro-Nuncio.

Dear Father Deacon Randy,

An Eastern Catholic “Winfield” in Illinois?? I’m THERE!! Of course, we couldn’t call it the “Walnut Valley Festival” for obvious reasons… I’m thinkin’ somethin’ like the “Holubki Hill Festival” would sum it up nicely!

😃

P.S. Nice web link… now, how 'bout some sound clips??

I know Archpriest Roman would also love to have an outing up at St. Elias in Brampton - heaven on earth and a place to camp. And all of the beauty of Ontario…

Yes, I know - that is an ancient website that hasn’t been updated since 2004; now that we are playing together after a multi-year hiatus again hopefully we can do something with it.

I think “Varenyky Valley” would work, maybe “Kapusta Holler”…“Pierogi Flats”…

Try out the Kubasonics as well. They are a real Ukie Greek Catholic folkie-fusion band - zabava meets Tim O’Brien with some funky licks. We have “Giants of the Prairies” and it is a family favorite. The Kubasonics are the alter ego for Brian Cherwick who has a Ph.D. in Ukrainian musicology when he is not giving seminars in traditional Hutsul tsymbaly playing.

Just a reminder…

Tomorrow’s weather is supposed to be absolutely gorgeous! If you Chicago-area folks haven’t already made plans for the weekend, considering stopping out at Prairie Fest on the grounds of Annunciaton of the Mother of God Byzantine Catholic Parish in Homer Glen ('bout 1/2 hour or so southwest of the City, near Orland Park). 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Food, music, fun, AND a great way for the uninitiated to get up close and personal with Byzantine Catholicism!

Should be a WONDERFUL day… hope to see some of you folks out there!

Am here now. Listening to, “Under the Boardwalk.” One of the bandmembers (drummer) is in shorts and Hawaiian t-shirt, but no goatee. The other 4 members have beards, 3/4 of them are in Hawaiian t’s. 2 of the beards are goatees. Only one is fully white and the man belonging to that is playing the mandolin. Oooh! “Sweet Home Chicago”!
