I feel the same way. I cast my first vote for JFK, makng me way old. Neither he nor his party supported same sex marriage, abortion, or removing religious freedom. Neither did the party of LBJ or of Hubert Humphrey. It wasn’t me that lost my moral bearings, it was the party.
No kidding. I was raised by liberal Democrats and originally registered as a Dem. Think I even cast a vote for Carter (Lord forgive me for that mistake!) but imagine LBJ or JFK or RFK voting for same sex marriage or abortion at will? The Democrat party has clearly come out on the far Left of the spectrum. I want to use the analogy of the lunatics running the asylum although probably uncharitable. The “rank and file” Democrats plug along and keep voting with a D even though they have strong disagreements with the hedonist bent of the party platform.

As a former Dem I used to think it was the Republicans who were corrupt, mostly due to living through the Nixon era. Always thought of the Dems as being the honest and earnest group. But Rahm, Obama et al have become unbelievably corrupt and sleazy.

I am the same. Raised by Democrat Catholics and registered Democrat until one year ago. The party changed out from under us. Betrayed us. It used to be acceptable to be Catholic and Democrat: the people’s party, the working man’s party. The party that looks out for the poor. The party of the Kennedys. The party that Blacks and Hispanics could trust to uphold civil rights. But look at the members now. We have Biden, Pelosi, and Sebelius. People who are so embroiled in partisan politics that they have bought into the party’s platform and abandoned their Catholic values. Or perhaps have used the party’s stances as validation for their own heretical beliefs. It was once perfectly possible to be a respectable Catholic and a registered Democrat at the same time, but that ship has sailed and it’s never coming back. Unfortunately it is not possible for the Republican party to listen to Catholic values regarding welfare entitlements, serving the poor, immigration and other issues, and to me it is increasingly evident that Republicans have a vested interest in keeping abortion legal, but like others, I suck it up and vote pro-life, if just to make a statement against the warped anti-Catholic values of today’s Democratic party.

I grew up Catholic and Republican, though most Catholics along the northeast coast of Lake Erie were Democrats. We certainly didn’t have the vitriolic division that exists today.

For the record, I am still Republican and blessedly Catholic by the Grace of God.

Down here in the south, the Catholics are mainly republican, while the Protestants are mainly Democrats, with the exception of the Mormons, who are republican too.

I vacationed at Snowbird in Utah, the reddest state in the Union. I thought I was in heaven on Earth. Mormons are very conservative. I just went to a BBQ with a Mormon who is taking a work sabbatical to run Romney’s Massachusetts campaign (lots of luck in MA!).
