I used to work at a Catholic preschool. Every so often I’d find Chick tracts or others off that nature in the restroom (it was open to the public, I don’t really think one of the teachers was doing it!). I think they are so funny. Actually I have a little collection going. When I worked at a bank people would leave tracts on the counters as well (not Catholic ones, but the general “pray the sinner’s prayer so you’ll be sure to go to Heaven” type ones). I can’t help but take them when someone offers me one. They make me laugh!

Me too - I found a really funny one along these lines at the train station on Sunday.

The funniest thing was at the end it said ‘all Bible quotes taken from the KJV - don’t trust any false corrupted copies’ :rotfl:
 
This is what I don’t get.

One of the main appeals of the JTC tracts is that they are in readable, entertaining, well-drawn (yes, well-drawn!) comic book format.

So WHY don’t we Catholics come up with our own comic book format tracts that are readable, entertaining, and well-drawn?

There’s nothing wrong with being readable, entertaining, and well-drawn, is there? Isn’t that the idea behind the Cistene Chapel? The Gospel for the illiterate?

I’m serious, here, people! I converted to Catholicism two years ago and I love it. But almost every piece of Catholic evangelistic literature that I have read is in book form, boring, and wordy. When I say boring, I mean to the average person. Certainly the books are interesting, but honest, now, if you were a non-knowledgeable person (not a bright, enthusiastic Catholic!), and you were sitting in a bus terminal, and you saw a copy of JTC’s “Bewitched” and a copy of Thomas Howard’s Evangelical is Not Enough, what would YOU be more likely to pick up and scan through?!

I’ve heard that there are saint comic books. WHERE? Are they little and cool like the JTC comix? Why not?

I wish that SOMEONE out there with artistic talent would get the idea and act on it. I think this could be a great tool to help Catholics witness about their faith, provided, of course, that the comix were HONEST, not full of lies like the JTC comix.
 
I have not even seen those since high school (which makes me wonder how old this guy really is) until recently. Someone seems to be flooding our area with them, because several parents have brought them to my attention. I have asked the kids to bring me anything that looks like a comic book about God or religion or church, and to try and remember who gave it to them.

One source was a VBS – huge program over 1000 kids – at a nearby mega-freeway-satellite dish church. Another is the youth group of a fundamentalist store front church, only a few kids, but apparently they are assigned to plaster the cars in our parking lot with literature every few weeks.

I used to make Christian comic books, but nobody was interested, other than my Sunday School students. I tried sending them to a publisher, but I was told that nobody buys them.
 
It’s true what someone else here said, that Jack Chick comes up every so often in these forums. You might want to read through one of these previous threads here as one example of those. I can’t recommend this thread highly enough, it’s one of the funniest threads I’ve ever seen! In particular, take note of the posts of Severinus starting at number #21… Enjoy

What is so incredible to me is the penetration that this blasphemy (and I think it is Blasphemy of the Body of Christ in the Eucharist) of Chick Publications has. That a comic book has more influence on a fundamentalist than the Church that Jesus founded. What’s next television being more influential than the Church? Wait, don’t answer that…😛

I have a good response to them, I get my Gospel from the Church and the Bible established by Jesus Christ, you get yours from a comic book?

It is a great gig, they must make a fortune off all this stuff. It really is religious pornography. Just dumb down the message and guess who it caters to?
 
I grew up Southern Baptist, so I’ve encountered numerous Chick tracts throughout my life.

I never heard of the anti-catholic ones until I started visiting this site, however. I think Catholics come into contact with these anti-Catholic Chick tracts way more than the typical Protestant does.
 
In my grade school apologetics classes our teacher made photocopies of all of them. One of our assignments each day was to read them, turn the photo copied paper over and debunk the living hell out of each page. Good times! Easy peasy!

I am glad this site provides apologetics material to combat this nonsense (Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon and so on). I remember on Theology review I was able to answer someone who asserted the text from the Gospel that you should call no man father as a proof text that you should not call Priests father. Mitch Pacwa pointed out that Protestants fail to read further and note that it also says call no man teacher. That this text should not be taken literally but intelligently for what it means to say to us (i.e. Paul poinst out he is the sipiritual father to those he has convereted/discipled and so on). This person had no answer because Protestants are often used to quoting that and nodding knowingly as if once again our RC brothers have been duped.

Have any of you encountered the Chick nonsense and how have you handled it.

When these showed up at our church, I took them into my 6th grade and youth groups and we went over it and debunked the lies, page by page.

Also talked about how dangerous it is to those who know their faith “a little” but may not be able to spot the lies and twistings of Catholic teachings.

Final word on it? If anyone every tells you or you think the Catholic Church teaches something contrary to scripture, you"

A. Are misinterpreting scripture.

B. Are misunderstanding (or are being lied to about) the teachings of the Catholic Church

Because the teachings of the Catholic church will never contradict scripture. NEVER.
