 Wow. I thought it was pretty annoying when someone at my place of employment left these laying around, but it’s really annoying when there’s one in your mailbox!!

I don’t think the mailman would have done it, because that could cost him his job. I think it was neighbors next door.

Maybe I need a Benedict 16 flag hanging up (on their side?) 😉

You see this little “literary classic” is called, “THE BEAST” and it describes how the Anti-Christ will rule the world from the VATICAN!

I can’t help but take that personally!

Funny how the little blank spot on the back where the proselytizer can sign their name is ALWAYS blank!

**Hey - look at the bright side. **
You can always use it to line your birdcage . . .

I’ve been given almost every Chick tract printed by somebody trying to make sure I have a chance to hear the “gospel”. One of my favorite was “This Was Your Life” and “Somebody Goofed”, Jack does have an imagination, I will admit.

My cousin use to send me the “Crusader” comic books…I don’t like comic books…but they were entertaining…in the “Raiders of the Lost Ark” kind of way…a lot of fantasy and magic going on.

It is illegal to put anything OTHER than U. S. Postal mail in a mailbox – y’know: mail with a stamp. You can be sure it was not the letter carrier who left it; I am sure he/she could be fired.

I wouldn’t confront your neighbors, though because you have to live with 'em.

I’m pretty sure it’s illegal for anyone but a postal letter carrier to put anything in your mailbox, even a letter with a stamp on it.

I have an idea. Knock on your neighbor’s door and tell them that someone left this is your mailbox (as an aside, express mild shock that someone would risk being caught in a federal offense just to drop off a pamphlet). Then tell them that, of course, being a Catholic you’re not interested in this kind of thing, but that it seems like something that they might like to see.

They get their tract back, and you get your point across without accusing them. Best of all, they’ll never touch your mailbox again! And I doubt they’ll leave tracts anywhere else on your property.

Of course you have to do this all very sweetly, so make sure you’re in your best acting mode before ringing the bell. 🙂

The person who gave you the Chick tract is just trying to Save you from Hell. They may be mistaken, but they mean well.

Have you ever seen one? They look and read like they were created in hell.
The shredder is the best place for them.

Since you have no proof, I think the flag idea you suggested works best.

**“This Was Your Life” is a classic, in a rather screwy way :o 🙂 **

**I have only two of the comic books, which are full of Alberto Rivera’s reminiscences of his past as a Spanish Jesuit bishop :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: **

This is hysterical:

The Wonderful World Of Chick

by Andrew Hultkrans

There are other sites poking fun at all things Chicky - but that has to be the funniest.

That’s how I feel when Christian missionaries stick “Jews for Jesus” garbage in my mailbox!

BTW back in the late 70s, a friend of mine (Jewish like me) who lived in Brooklyn, used to collect Chick tracts. she got me hooked on collecting them, too.

I went so far as to contact Chick at the time of the Alberto controversy, and he sent me several of the large Alberto comics, personally autographed by Alberto himself!

I saved them, and just a few years ago, I sold them as a set on Ebay for $100.00!! Can you believe somebody paid a hundred bucks for that?

I still have a few of the old ones lying around…they’re really amusing, and they’re fun to collect.

Actually, I kind of wish I had a collection of them. It’s sort of a perverse fascination with anti-Catholic pathology. Chick is the King!

Collecting them is actually kind of fun. I may get back into it, because it reminds me of my friend from NY, who has since passed away.

If you find and save some of the older ones, they are worth money!

An alternative comic book shop in my area sells them for laughs. They have a special “Chick Tract rack” near the front desk.

I don’t always find Chick tracts amusing.

After my mom died, I called a local thrift shop to have them pick up some of her things that I couldn’t keep. They told me they only picked up furniture, so we had to go there to drop the things off.

While there, I found out the shop is run by a fundamentalist Christian charity that funds a homeless shelter for men…but they had a whole rack of Chick tracts near the front door!

So I asked them, “Are they there so people can get a good laugh?”, and I was met with stony silence.

I regret giving them anything because I find those booklets to be very bigoted.

The Monsterwax collectors’ site has several pages of Chicklore – reviews, debates and trivia – from both sympathizers and critics, and lots of kitsch fans too. It gives you an interesting perspective. he was a ctually a really nice guy, by all reports, trying to use his one talent (cartooning) to do wha tmatters most (saving souls) when a few people tooka dvantage of his lack of experience in the real world. They sold him conspiracy theories and asked him please to spread these stories for them, until he finally agreed to do so. He is apparently unshakeable in his conviction that his sources wouldn’t lie to him. I find him a fascinating psychological case to read about. Paranoids always are, to me. They often are willing to suspect anyone of anyhting except their sources, who see them coming a mile away: literal-minded, tense people who think there’s a simple key to the way the world works and once they have it, they won’t ever have to be afraid of everything again. They expect someone just like themselves to come along and tell them what to be afraid of and what not to. So, along came Alberto, John, Rebecca and Elaine, and I believe the other one’s name was Bill, dressed sharp but drab, rigid postures, hard handshakes and old-fashioned manners ready. They told him their wild tales and he soon had no resistance. Now he dedicates his life to proving they were right. He’s past 80, I believe, and isn’t likely to change his mind now. Countless people have confronted him with the evidence that John was still a witch when he and Jack were hanging out, that Alberto was just in deep financial trouble and had a grudge, that Rebecca and Elaine had rocky psychiatric histories, that Bill wasn’t really respected or typical in his circles but known for being a pushy braggart who collected credentials as a hobby, and that he needs to do background checks. He has always said he knows his friends wouldn’t lie to him. What can you do? So he then takes in other people while meaning well. And they do the same.🤷

I have a whole collection of them.

I also have a personal experience with Jack T Chick that proves that at one time, he wasn’t the jerk that many of you think he is.

But I’ve already described that in another thread on this forum a year ago.

I think that in the last few years, Pastor Chick has slipped out of the bounds of reality. He is accepted by very few Protestants, although many of his tracts are still used in evangelical settings.

Laugh if you wish, but it is a fact that most people in the U.S. read at a 6th grade reading level or LOWER.

JTC’s motto is "CHICK TRACTS GET READ!

And he’s right. People who don’t (or can’t) read books like Imitation of Christ or City of God or even the Bible will pick up a fun little comic book with clever pictures and good puns and read through it and remember it.

How many of you remember a single chapter of Imitation of Christ? But many of you can recite the plot of Holy Joe or Bewitched or This Was Your Life, can’t you?

I personally find a lot of the Chick illustrations very good, like an old-fashioned comic book. I don’t know a lot about art, but I think these are what you would call “sensationalist” or “yellow journalism.” You can see a lot of this kind of art in old turn-of-the century newspapers. Very lurid and exaggarated, especially the faces. Hey, so I’m not very classy when it comes to art (I do love Michelangelo’s Pieta!) But I happen to think that the Chick pics are cool. I certainly can’t draw as well!

And I also think a lot of the “plots” are pretty clever. There are movies out there that don’t have plots as good as many of the Chick comics, but because hunky actors and sexy actresses star in them, people pay twelve bucks and ooh and ahh and hand them Oscars and Golden Globes. And those movies do a lot more harm in our culture and are a lot more insulting to Christianity than the Chick tracts!

Perhaps instead of criticizing Chick, Catholics should create their own little fun and pithy comic books instead of handing potential converts a 500 page Catechism and a 1000 page Bible and a stack of papal encyclicals and the documents of the various Church Councils including Vatican II and saying, “Here ya go–just read these and you’ll understand Christianity!”

Yeah, some people say that about Playboy… save them and they may be worth money… or… I just get them to read the articles.

Either way… trash… if you want it in your home, that is a reflection on you.
