I have a long history with Chick Tracts, dating back to 1990, when I swallowed their nonsense hook, line, and sinker. I have discussed them on one of my blogs, but i do have a question: Is it better to remain silent about them, as publicly refuting them gives them attention? ANy opinions?

These tracts have been refuted over and over on this and other Catholic MBs. So it may be best if someone brings them up, to simply give them a link to see all the facts as present by Catholic apologists.

It is much better to refute them. Better they gain attention by people who know they’re rubbish than somebody stumbling across them by chance, and with nobody to refute them, they believe it.

I agree. There’s many anti-Catholic websites that use the Chick stuff to attack the Church. As long as you can support a blog, I say go for it! :knight2:

I had a pretty radical conversion experience in 73 that started with the Holy Spirit using the verses in “This is your life”. I have literally passed out hundreds of the same tract over the years…He later came out with some controversial ones including the catholic one…The people
readily accepted the cartoon format…Today I use a simple leaflet tract to share the gospel message…

Another problem with CHick is that his “Gospel” is the one St. Paul warned about. It is “another Gospel” that is not what was preached by Jesus Christ and the Apostles.

you should bring up Chick Tracts and the consequences they have. Just remember to pray for this man in general

Chick tracts are awful. They are one of the least ‘Christian’ things I have ever seen. Definitely make sure you spread the word that they are false lies.

Not all that hard and in fact already been done right here at Catholic Answers.

And it’s great that CA has this information. Thank you for the link. 👍 Unfortunately, those who need to read it the most don’t read articles posted by CA. They don’t read them even when they post on CAF–on any topic. I wish they would! How much easier it would be to refute people’s misconceptions. The more widely Chick’s tracts can be refuted the better! Hurray for CA! and for anyone willing to take the time and effort to wade through the filth Chick puts out in order to get the truth to as many people as possible.

His tracts are one of the worst things I have ever seen.
It’s maybe 5% truth covered with 95% lies.
Yes, when I was a Pentecostal I was shocked and dismayed by his tracts. How anyone who claims to love Jesus could have such visceral hatred for others is beyond me.

When I was Baptist, they were recommended as “telling the unadulterated truth” Perhaps I will write a book refuting one of his more ridiculous tracts page by page. “why is Mary Crying?” or “the Death Cookie” would be perfect.

My opinion is that as they teach grave error, they must be discussed. The truth must be proudly proclaimed.

I believe that some non-Catholics actually believe they’re true, but others use them, knowing they are mostly hype just to scare their own out of considering the Catholic faith, as a “anything that works” excuse. I found that attitude, among others like it, most objectionable. I thought, “If one has to fudge the truth to keep people in a church how is that being fair to them or to those being attacked?” So, the Chick tracts had just the opposite effect on me than intended by their author. Still, people love to have their ears tickled. Refuting such nonsense may be reasonable, but there will always be those who will want to believe it because it makes them feel superior or more secure where they are.

One problem is where do you start? It seems like an insurmountable task.
One thing I was blessed with in life is my desire to be a computer programmer. The reason why I mention this is because honestly, being a professional computer programmer means you are choosing a life of solving insurmoutable problems. One might not think this off the batt, but you would be supprised how often one is ask to make gigantic fundamental changes to code.

One thing I’ve learned is this, you can’t really solve the big problem in a lot of cases. But what you can do is solve the smaller problems, and frequently you find that when you start solving the small problems you end up (eventually at least) knocking out the bigger one.

Just take them on a track at a time as they come up. And record your thoughts. Eventually the whole thing will collapse down upon it’s self, such is always the case with mistruths.

It might be simpler to research articles in which these tracts have already been refuted and provide links to them on one of your blogs. I know I read articles on both the tracts you propose refuting. Of course, I can’t think where they were as I write this, but I’d start right here in CA. If someone else has already done the work, your job would be to help get it disseminated.
