CA already have a great special report on Chick Tracts.
It is great, for a general refutation. I assume you are talking about Jimmy Akins’ The Nightmare World of Jack Chick. I was thinking more about taking specific tracts and doing a full-blown refutation.

And it’s great that CA has this information. Thank you for the link. 👍 Unfortunately, those who need to read it the most don’t read articles posted by CA. They don’t read them even when they post on CAF–on any topic. I wish they would! How much easier it would be to refute people’s misconceptions. The more widely Chick’s tracts can be refuted the better! Hurray for CA! and for anyone willing to take the time and effort to wade through the filth Chick puts out in order to get the truth to as many people as possible.
Ah but this is available from Catholic Answers in tract form. That means we can put them into the hands of people who present us with that stuff and they can face good apologetics refutations up close and personal.

As for refuting each one in depth. I’ve done a couple here at CAF but the fact is that the CA white paper covers it all. It w easier to just c&p from the CA article.

Duh! I didn’t know that. Thanks for the info. $1.00 is a fantastic price. It’s a book, though, not a tract? Yes? If so it might be hard to get people to read it. That’s the evil genius of Chick–the easy-to-carry/read comic book format. The pictures are just as effective as the words, if not more so because they really stick in the mind. Employing the same format to try to refute him would be hard since apologetics requires explaining not grabbing people with indelible images and a well-chosen sensational words. A pickle indeed for anyone who might try.

I have a long history with Chick Tracts, dating back to 1990, when I swallowed their nonsense hook, line, and sinker. I have discussed them on one of my blogs, but i do have a question: Is it better to remain silent about them, as publicly refuting them gives them attention? ANy opinions?
How would you respond if someone who was mentally challenged stepped on your toes? That should guide your reaction.

Well anyone who is completely impressed with comic book propaganda is kinda the lowest denominator anyway. These things are not for those who read much or well and Christianity requires both.

However, Grotto Press has some VERY good and inexpensive Catholic comic tracts that I use quite a bit. They make Chick’s stuff look like the junk that it really is and present Catholic truth to boot. I just ordered over $40.00 worth yesterday because my supply of some titles was getting low.

I often use one to mark my place in the missal at Mass. I never find them the next week. 👍

Oh…and I’m ordering 10 copies of the CA tract tomorrow. I want them on hand.

One problem is where do you start? It seems like an insurmountable task.
Considering that a good deal of his tracts seem to recycle the same information, you would probably only really need to pick out 5 or 6 errors and that would probably just about cover everything.

I know that “Papa” and “Are Roman Catholics Christians” are essentially the same tract, so what you say is true, but I was really referring to that sometimes there are multiple errors on a single page, as well as explaining his out of context quotes just seems like a huge undertaking, but I think I may try to tackle the project over the summer, or at ;least get a good start on it.

True. The thing is imagery really sticks in the mind more than words–it’s how human beings take in information. Advertisers know this and take advantage of it, as do political campaigns. Most people don’t stop to reason things out, unfortunately. I only wish they did! :yup:

This is great! I’ve bookmarked the site. The people putting these out have come to understand the appeal of the Chick tracts by countering them with ones that explain the Faith in a way most people will find easy to read with images that stick in the mind. Good resource–thanks for sharing it! 😃

That’s a good idea for those who are able to use them to good effect. I’m a bit of a hermit at home here. I haven’t run into a Chick tract in a long time, but then I don’t live in a large city or in the Bible belt. All the best with your efforts to combat this kind of anti-Catholic bigotry and misinformation. 👍

Thanks for the post. I just sent for the book.

Some Catholics actually enjoy Chick tracts on one level, because they’re funny, but I can see the damage they can do if some people actually believe them.
