Child attending different religion high school

Happy Friday everyone!

I was talking with a co-worker of mine and she mentioned that her son got a full scholarship(soccer) to attend an Episcopal high school in the area. It’s has high marks and one of the best schools in state and also very expensive to attend. The family is Catholic and attends weekly mass.

Just curious on how you would feel if your son/daughter was given a full scholarship to a non catholic, private school? Would you let them attend?

If all goes well, our oldest will be starting our private school’s high school in a couple years. It’s not officially any particular denomination, but has a strong Protestant vibe (but with a strong interest in Latin, historical Christianity, liturgy and Christian art–i.e. Catholicism). We’ll have to play it by ear, but so far, so good.

And that’s with no scholarship.

It all depends on the particular school.

ETA: For us personally, it makes a big difference that our oldest has an Asperger’s diagnosis, and it’s been very good for her to be in a small school where everybody knows her from kindergarten on. I suspect our other children could go to other schools just as well, but now that our oldest is settled in well at this school, we’ll be here until they kick us out or we have a really good reason to leave.

Assuming your coworker’s son does not participate in the Episcopal “Mass”, and knows his faith well enough to not be deterred by heresy, I don’t think it should be an issue.
 
I don’t think it’s a big deal generally. I was a protestant when I attended my Catholic high school.

At the end of the day the primary purpose of any school is education. If, in looking at the curriculum, there is anything that gives you reason to believe they would not welcome a Catholic point of view, or would in any way seek to undermine your authority as parents, then do not send them to the school. If there is not, then use your best judgment.

At the end of the day, teachers and coaches have a great deal of influence. You have to determine if that influence will be good or bad for your children.

I will also add that as a Catholic I have worked with non-denominational ministries, most specifically Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which have only helped to strengthen my own faith. As a college student I learned more about my Catholic faith through studying other religions, most notably Islam, than I did in any Catholic studies program in high school or college.

I agree. A friend of mine, child of very devout catholic parents, went to a Methodist school for most of her life because of academic reasons. She is over 40 years old and is and has always been a practicing catholic with a strong faith.

And now you are Catholic… I think that is the OPs fears in reverse.
 
Well – some Catholic schools are so bad, they turn Catholic into protestants, or worse - atheists!.. The ‘worst’ I think that can happen is that the Episcopalian school discounts or dismisses the Catholic moral teachings or allows an ex-Catholic to denounce the Church during class discussion - or perhaps, employ someone openly living an anti-Catholic lifestyle.

To a non religious private school? Yes
To a religious school? No
