I am sure your traumatic past with this has had an effect on you. And it will color your view of any sort of parental/homeschool situation. That would be expected.

Imprisonment by non-legal authorities is illegal in any jurisdiction in which I’ve ever lived. The woman I described was physically restrained from leaving her parents’ house when she had tried in the past. She is not the only one to whom this has happened. Are you familiar with the “No Longer Quivering” movement, which is comprised of women who have escaped from families who are strict adherents of the Quiverfull/strict homeschooling movement? If not, you might consider Googling it.

Again, the more psychological restrictions mentioned by DarkLight are more common, if nearly as bad in their results, but this stuff does happen, and even, though much more rarely, in some very strict Catholic communities.

That I lived through a bad situation in no small part due to homeschooling does not invalidate the experience that I and many other women had in that movement. For the record, my DH and I actually plan on homeschooling our kids, albeit for much different reasons than those of my parents. We parent our daughter with the expectation that she’ll become a functioning, independent adult one day, and see it as one of our primary duties as parents to give her the tools she’ll need to reach that goal. Human nature being what it is, of course, what she does with those tools is up to her, but she’ll have them if she’s willing to use them.
