When my kids were little (for perspective, the youngest is now 20), we would limit certain things on Fridays, like only religious videos (we had the CCC series of saints’ movies) or only religious books to read or color. On Good Friday, there would be no TV from noon to 3 p.m.-- we went for a walk and tried to be quiet or speak in whispers only. That would prepare them for when they got older to understand about giving up, making sacrifices, and attending the lengthier services.
