My husband asked me if my 10 month old baby and 3 yr old son will have to go without meat today and on Fridays. I told him Yes??
I am asuming that the rules apply to children too?
Any info would be greatly apreciated.

No, children below school age don’t have to abstain from meat.

Although I don’t know why you would want to cook separately for them, kids like fish sticks and mac and cheese and it does provide nutrition.

After age 14 you are to abstain from eating meat and after age 18 you are required to fast.

On the other end of the spectrum, if you are 60 or older, you do not need to fast, but you are still required to abstain from meat. I had a friend whose FIL claimed he could eat a nice steak on a Friday of Lent because he was beyond the age. Sorry, he doesn’t have to fast, but he must abstain.

The reason I asked was because we have some leftovers from yesterday. I didn’t know if I could let my children eat the chicken or not. Another thing is that my son does Not like fish at all. So somtimes, yes, I do have to cook seperately ffor him.

Ok, thank you everyone for the info!

As noted earlier, abstinence only applies to those over 14 years of age. I don’t know when that changed. It used apply to those over 7 years of age.

Guess I was born 40 years too soon. 😃

That’s for fasting… the poster was asking about abstinence.
Yup, I sure did misread it. But now they also have the answer to the other question that they didn’t ask.

A suggestion if you want to cook once for the whole family is to plan some fun meatless dinners for Lent. When we were little my mother had the whole family abstain, but we got to be creative and try to plan the menus with her. One of my favorite things during Lent was to have “breakfast” for dinner like waffles or pancakes with fruit or nuts on top and hot chocolate or milk to drink. Even our picky eater didn’t complain.

Another favorite was to sit down together and talk about Lent on Thursday night while picking through dried beans to make a big pot of soup for Friday. We ate that with cornbread and greens. We also loved spaghetti on Fridays with tomato sauce and cheese which also fit in one big pot. I think my mother was pretty tricky with the one pot meals that we kids thought were a big treat. Hmmm. It was probably about saving time and dishwashing.

I was taught this too during the 1980s at school by the Mercy Sisters.
When did it change from 7 to 14? Does the age requirment dffer from country to country?

The age limit is set by Canon Law. The current Code of Canon Law was enacted in 1983.

Those under 14 don’t HAVE to abstain but it would be a good idea and a good teaching opportunity for them, and unless they have a rare disease it won’t harm them to abstain from meat for one day. Besides I would have thought a 10 month old wouldn’t even be eating meat yet.

Well, they call it meat, but to look at it… :nope:

 10 month old babies eat meat?! I am shocked. I thought they still drank breastmilk or maybe ate babyfood.
