The Green Scapular is a mighty tool for bringing souls to conversion. You might want to try sewing one inside his pillow.

Let me relate the cautionary tale of my ex-son-in-law. He promised my daughter, who was carrying his child, that if she would elope with him at that moment in a civil ceremony, he would:
  • Becaome a Catholic.
  • Marry her in the Church.
  • Of course, the child would be Catholic.
His mother is Methodist, from a particular area in a certain part of the country that is anti-Catholic (not all Methodists are anti-Catholic). He was her only son by her second husband, and a youngest of four other siblings.

He did not dismiss my daughter out of hand. He just kept putting it off until: The cruise was over (he was active duty Navy); until they had saved enough to throw a big wedding AND have a big baptismal party at the same time; until the next baby was born. Of course, none of those “untils” ever materialized. And as you notice, he is my EX-son-in-law.

He never wanted to discus it, just kept putting it off.

I am not saying you should leave your husband, or that your husband should leave you. I am only emphasizing this story to underline a message: Don’t stop talking about it. And if God wills, hold off having a baby with this man until you have his cooperation.

Can I hear a great big AMEN!?!?!?

my thoughts exactly!

A canonical note: to do a baptism all the priest needs is a founded hope the child will be raised Catholic.

Oops, I re-read the first post and realized the child is not born yet. The man lied to you and led you on. Now he is trying to undermine your faith. Please discuss this with your pastor. Under no circumstances should you consider joining the JW’s. Hold your ground on the baptism. Make it clear to him that they will be baptized and raised Catholic and not JW’s. Do not give in. And again, please talk to your pastor.

A priest should baptise with the permission of one parent.

From the Code of Canon Law:
“Canon 868 §1 For an infant to be baptised lawfully it is required:
1º that the parents, or at least one of them, or the person who lawfully holds their place, give their consent;
2º that there be a realistic hope that the child will be brought up in the catholic religion. If such hope is truly lacking, the baptism is, in accordance with the provisions of particular law, to be deferred and the parents advised of the reason for this.
§2 An infant of catholic parents, indeed even of non-catholic parents, is lawfully bapstised in danger of death, even if the parents are opposed to it.”
(From The Code of Canon Law: New Revised English Translation, HarperCollins Liturgical, 1997, ISBN 0-00-599375-X, page 201).

Perhaps your parish priest would also be a good person to speak to about this.

Don’t stop talking about it. And if God wills, hold off having a baby with this man until you have his cooperation.

That should mean abstinance, not birth control. Of course, abstinance may bring him around pretty quickly!

Even more difficult; when you baptise your child as a Catholic, you are making a committment to raise that child in the catholic church. Which means weekly Mass, holy communion at the right age, CCD classes, etc.

If he will not support you (and the agreement he made at marriage), to baptise your children Catholic, how will you be able to RAISE them Catholic?

There’s no sneaking that one in. You either take them to Sunday Mass, or you don’t. He might notice that.

We don’t know the young man lied. He may well be under pressure to take this new stand. Pray, pray, pray . . .

Lrjm -

You are new here, welcome. This is a very old thread, and the OP has had much heartache and has lost a child since this question was asked.

It is kindest to let this thread go dormat again.

Baptize them yourself.

Bring home some holy water (tap water will work, but you might feel better using holy water) sprinkle the baby in the sign of the cross using the formula in Matthew. “I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.” Do it with the intention of doing what the Church does.

This is a perfectly valid baptism. Check it out in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Suppose a non-christian (athiest, islamic, bhuddist, etc.) were babysitting my hypothetical baby and it started to turn purple in the face and the babysitter thought it was going to die. He didn’t know if it had been baptized and knowing my beliefs felt that I would want my baby baptized. So he did what I described above, it would be a perfectly valid baptism.

I’m sorry, but this is not fully correct. CCC # 903 states that When the necessity of the Church warrants it, and WHERE MINISTERS ARE LACKING, lay persons may confer Baptism…and # 1284 states that “In case of necessity”…any person can baptize provided that he have the intention of doing that which the Church does, etc…

It is not permitted for any person to baptize at any time. It is only permitted if there is no available valid minister, and in case of necessity (meaning, person is near death, or in the middle of a desert where there’s no Church, etc…)

Having a dispute with a spouse about whether or not to baptize a child (which in the poster’s case, doesn’t even exist yet) is not a necessity or emergency. Therefore, I think you’re advice is incorrect.
