Children watching Medjagore movie in School

So my 3rd grader came home from her Catholic School today and she told me they watched a movie called The Day the Sun Danced. She said it was about a place called Medjagore (sp?) where children saw the Virgin Mary. She really liked the movie and told me she like to go there someday.

I am NOT posting this to discuss whether or not the sightings were authentic… I know that’s up for debate. What I am wondering is why that movie would be shown to children if we’re not certain that it’s true? Do you think there’s any harm in that? I’d hate for my daughter to find out it’s not true and then question other things she learned in her religion class.

Your feelings are correct. You should ask the teacher and the school administration why your child was shown a video about an un-approved apparition. Let them know that there are several videos on Lourdes and Fatima.
 
The day the sun danced sounds like our lady of fatima. Are you sure she got the name right.

I asked my daughter just now… was it about Fatima or a place called Medjagore and she said “it was the “M” one” but I checked at Amazon and you are right… that IS the name of the Fatima movie so I think my daughter is confused. I don’t know where she would’ve heard of Medjagore though… ???

I suppose I’ll have to check with the teacher. I hope it was Fatima.
 
It is a positive movie about children seeing the Blessed Mother in Medjugorie. Whats the big deal? Why go bother the teacher who is teaching children about spirituality when that is so lacking in any school.

Medjugorie will not be approved till the apparitions cease and they haven’t . Friends of mine have met 2 of the visionaries and is adament about the miracles going on are authentic and Medjugorie is a place of prayer.
 
My mother is as big a Medjugorje fan as anyone, and I’ve in fact been myself (though this was before I knew it was unapproved).

At the same time, I think Catholic schools have a duty to teach clear doctrine and absolutely should stick to the approved apparitions. There are so many uplifting movies about Lourdes and Fatima. Why confuse kids by showing them movies about doubtful ones like Medj?
 
I’ve been to Medjugorje. I can say it was a wonderful experience.

But the point is it does not belong in a Catholic school 3rd grade classroom. Not until it has been approved by the Church. Unless the teacher is speaking about visions and visionaries and that some are approved by the Church and some like Medjagore are being investigated and others like Bayside have been condemned. Then the name Medjagore does not even belong in the classroom conversation.

I think the teacher just got the names confused and used the wrong one. She should correct this so the children understand what it was that they saw on the video and are not confused.

You must be kidding.

Why bother the teacher? Because she is comfused regarding the location of this apparation. She must have told the children that this movie which is based on Fatima is actually Medjagore (sp?) Otherwise how would a child come up with the M, word.

I have several friends that have never met any of the visionaries and they say that the local ordinary (bishop) has said that there is nothing special going on there. Who would you believe?

I partially agree with you, but I was just stating that it was a wonderful experience. Perhaps I was a little off topic. Sorry.

I guess I wouldn’t believe either, but either go see for myself, as far as if it’s worth the experience, or, if you mean “is there really an apparation”, wait for the official word from the Church.
And it’s Medjugorje btw 🙂

Getting back to the original post, **carol marie **is correct to be concerned:

firstly, that an unapproved apparition may have been promoted;

secondly, that the video was about Fatima, however the third graders came home with the impression that the video was about an apparition **carol marie **knows is not approved.

I think the teacher should be reminded not to promote Medjugorje in the classroom. It’s not fair to the children or their parents.
 
My feelings are that cartoons that help third graders learn and love stories about Our Blessed Mothers love for us can only promote a stronger faith.

Kids watch cartoons all the time. They are not always fact based. This one is a beautiful story. Too often, kids grow up not having the spirituality that is needed to grow up and stay with Catholicism.

I would have been so happy if cartoons that endorsed faith would have been shown to my daughter. Third graders don’t care about approved and not approved. I would have thanked the teacher for finding an entertaining way for children to learn and understand.

But if the teacher doesn’t even know enough of what she’s teaching to get the SUBJECT MATTER right (ie the name of the apparition being discussed in the film) then that’s worse than teaching them nothing.

WHat would be your reaction if the child came home saying ‘oh we saw a film today that said 2+2 =5’ and the teacher says 'yeah, I did show ‘em a film that said that’. She’d be out the door in less than five minutes because someone with such poor knowledge clearly isn’t fit to teach.

I just wanted to say that this is SO true!! Having grown up mostly Post Vatican II, I can say that what drew me back to Catholicism was the spirituality that I managed to get in early elementary school, and through reading the lives of the saints. Without specifically Catholic spirituality, the Church looks the same as many others.
 
Do you have any idea hpow many different opinons, contradictions to church terachings, possible heresies, and anything else that might be damaging to ones faith that I was taught in Catholic School? This should be the least of your worries. Even now, I am very confused as to what the Church teaches in regards to several things since the priests can’t agree on it. Well maybe not confused but I don’t feel the need to care for all of the teachings or take the right interpretations as much. I don’t really care but the point is, you are probably going to have to worry about several other things much more devastating than this. And for all you know, Medugorie might be true.
