I agree that many Cartoons of today aren’t very geared towards kids. I can’t stand the Cartoon Network. I mean do they really think kids won’t catch what’s on the “adult swim” times? Anyway, most cartoons I’ve seen on Nickelodeon are usually ok, IMHO.

We are members of Netflix and get most of these from them.

I think the blonde wears her skirts too short, but other than that I haven’t noticed.
 
What about Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends? For older kids.

Fraggle Rock is definitely on DVD! (I’m a huge muppet fan, so it’s on my “want to buy” list, lol)

Regarding the Suite Life of Zack & Cody: I agree that there’s too much emphasis on twelve-or-thirteen-year-old boys dating. I don’t remember ever hearing the Church itself mentioned, though the portrayal of the nuns (who drive motorcycles and think Brittney Spears is “Such a talented actress!”) is offensive. I wonder if the writers even know nuns are Catholic. However, the show is also smart and funny and (most importantly) the mom is not a total idiot!

In response to the post about the SpongeBob ep “Sailor Mouth,” the episode was decidedly not in favor of cursing–the main characters didn’t know the word was bad until they were told, at which point they tried (and of course failed) to stop using it. Things got out of control (this being SpongeBob, that’s pretty much a foregone conclusion) and the characters who resorted to cursing were duly punished.

I used to watch Drake & Josh, but I’m getting turned off for reasons other posters mentioned, plus Megan’s constant referring to her brothers as “Boobs.” Normally the writers restrain themselves, but this did result in a breast joke one time (she calls her brothers “stupid boobs” and a nearby woman looks down at her chest, puzzled) and there are plenty of near misses (“What’s this, some new kind of boob dance?”).

My family ends up watching a lot of EWTN. (Please, someone hire them some real animators!)

Amen to that! Decent content, but not much to look at…

We don’t have TV any more, so the little ones watch a lot of VeggieTales DVDs, and stuff like Muppets, and Rugrats. My oldest son watched waaaaaayyy too much Cartoon Network when my mom watched him, I can’t stand it. Dexter was OK, Jimmy Neutron is great, other than that, not so much.

I WISH they would still air stuff like we had as kids, like Looney Tunes, or even later stuff like Animaniacs. That was good entertainment!
 
The only “kids cartoons” that are worth watching now are:

Spongebob- Funny, well animated for a Nick show (although the animation has gotten stiffer in the later seasons), and solid writing.

Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends- Hilarious at times, great art and animation (which is RARE for a cartoon now-a-days), good storylines, solid writing.

Kim Possible- Solidly animated, solidly written, interesting storylines.

Honorable mentions that are no longer on the air or are on sparingly:

Dexters Lab- This was excellent before the Chris Savino crew took over. The newer episodes are just… bad and now the show isn’t even

PowerPuff Girls- Same as Dexter’s Lab.

Johnny Bravo- WHY have they stopped showing this?? It was HILARIOUS!!

Animaniacs, Freakaziod, Pinky and the Brain- Holy crud these shows were hilarious. Had the “classic” feel of the old 1940s Merrie Melody/Loony Tunes shorts.

And what happened to CN showing the classic Warner Bros. shorts and Hanna-Barbara shows?

The kids used to like Lilo and Stitch (the series). We banned it after realizing that “Plinkly” was basically a cross-dresser.

They love Magic School Bus. Jimmy Neutron is sometimes sinister, so we limit that.

My favorite is Little Bear. The characters are so sweet and engaging.

Absolutely banned forever: Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Very dark, bad, suggestive, anti-Catholic, etc.

Most everything else I haven’t seen. Once a month or so we go to a pizza place that has Cartoon Network on. I let dd watch what is on there, since it is so limited. Usually it is Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, which DH & I also enjoy.

Of course this is all about to be moot b/c our 23 yr old TV is about to die and we won’t be getting a new one for a while.

You know, my daughter loves these movies. We’d sort of weaned the children off them once my son started imitating the violent battle scenes (he’s not even 2 yet). Guess that’s just one of the differences in gender…anyway, now I’m glad I’ve got another reason to keep these movies off the play list. Thanks for pointing it out. I never thought much of it, since Plinkly is an alien, and not used to earth-based gender dressing, but as years obviously progressed, and he continued wearing the women’s clothing…well, it is weird.
 
We haven’t had cable in about a year, altho I keep thinking I want to get it back. When we did kinda prefered Cartoon Network over Nick cartoons. Except Spongebob, thats histerical. “Sailor Mouth” cracks me up I love the sound effects, I could see what some would not like it tho. I thought Fairly Odd Parents was really funny, there are some issue with it tho that probably don’t make up for the funny. Now evening CN is all Adult Swim which isn’t for kids at all, my kids are never getting TV (or computers for that matter ) in there rooms. I’d like to get the Classic Winnie the Pooh for the kids. They even sell those anymore?

There are some shows I tend to monitor or I just think are stupid. Mr. Rogers kinda bugs me (altho I did grow up watching him myself), sometimes I wonder if the doesnt introduce kids to random irrational fears. Big Comfy Couch is just stupid. Its a Big Big World makes me think of hippies. Aurthur and Post Cards from Buster are too “worldly”. Not to long ago there was Post Cards form Buster they taped that had a Lesbian couple in it. I don’t think that one got aired here tho. Teletubbies creep me out 🙂

Some of this stuff on now makes the controversial stuff when I was growing up (Smurfs) look like a model of kids shows.
 
We blocked Cartoon Network for the same reasons. Didn’t downgrade because we want to keep EWTN!

We still get PBS and most of the shows I approve of, although not all of them in one sitting! Sometimes Arthur irks me when the show focuses on the new age character (tarot cards, crystals and seances–O my!). We usually limit total media (TV, computer) to one hour a day.

I agree on the Lilo & Stitch thing wth Pleakley cross-dressing. It’s not only creepy, but it is just one more way that Disney has taken a great movie and turned it to garbage with sequels and series. The series in and of itself is inane and stupid. Among other problems (both of stupidity and from a Catholic moral perspective) is that Dr. Jumba still refers to himself as an evil genius and expresses pride whenever one of his “experiments” does something evil.

And about the new age witchy stuff… Why in the world is that so popular? It’s like five different shows that recycle the exact same pemise with minor cosmetic differences. There’s Winx Club, W.I.T.C.H., Mew Mew Power (or something), and a couple others I can’t remember. I think it started with Sailor Moon or one of those other dumb anime things. There’s a whole “Magical Girl” genere of anime and manga.

As for me, I’ll stick with anthropomorphic sponges and hedgehogs.

Anything Disney/Pixar is good, too, especially since Lasseter doesn’t seem too keen on letting the Disney money-grubbers trash the franchise like they did with everything else.
