Childrens clothing: what do you find acceptable?

So far seems like most of you agree with me. Where to you go to find classic clothing that is affordable?

I guess I have a hard time understanding where you can’t find anything that’s classic?

I mean, I shop at Target all the time… just go to their website’s “girls clothing” section… they all look like long sleeved t-shirts to me! What’s immodest about that? They have tons of polo type shirts… jeans… skorts… even the shirts that have a low neck always have a “layered look” that appears to have a shirt on underneath the low necked one?.. kwim?

I HAVE seen the nasty sayings and such… but not EVERY piece of clothing has that! It can’t be THAT hard… I guess I just don’t get the complaint…

What about Kohl’s? JCPenney’s? Target?

Am I missing something?

The skorts are cute only most of them are too short to sit down in. Most of the shirts are made to look layered and sexy. I am small and still wear kids sizes. I can’t find pants for work (required) that are not hip huggers (not allowed thank you) so my pants are a couple of years old.

Now for our five boys we can find almost anything. They always look nice and are easy to shop for.

You can find any “style” of pants at a department store… they don’t ONLY sell hiphuggers…

My sister and I are both teens who refuse to where anything to revealing. I am not ashamed to admit: our by far favorite store is the Goodwill. There you can find any and every style–including things that are both stylish and modest. Not to mention that we–since we have to pay for our own clothes–can afford much more shopping there. Yes, some of you may not have been looking for this solution but it’s still out there. And there’s no reason to be ashamed of shopping secondhand.

As for my younger sisters, my mom does a fine job dressing them. She just keeps it pretty simple, and they look fine, though they almost never wear anything designer. The clothes are out there–just don’t look at the top of the fashion rack.

I was walking by the girls section at Wal-mart the other day and saw black lacy underwear in little girl sizes. I was horrified. Is there a new pedophile section at Wal-mart? Who would buy this stuff for their daughters?

I have a hard time finding stuff for my 4 year-old girl!!! Mainly if it’s shorts and dresses!!! They always seem to be too short!!!

You know that times are not good for “modest” dressing, when you can fine web-sites such as these that have to promote “modest” dressing, and they put on their own special fasion show for the girls.

Apparently we are made differently then. I also have to go though the girl’s section for some of my clothes. For me, it has not been as easy as going to the petite section or the girl’s section. I’m 5’ and slender. For me it has been an absolute nightmare to find clothes in the past few years! NONE of them fit. If I want jeans I’m going to have to go though Lands End to have them custom made. I have looked EVERYWHERE for jeans. Again none of them fit. I’m sure you find this very hard to believe but it’s true. I reached a point were I needed clothes couldn’t find any so, I had to start making them. Decent shirts I can find. It’s the skirts and pants I’m having an extreme difficulty with. My dd is also slender and has long legs. Most skirts are too short. She is a growing girl and I always keep that in mind when getting clothes for her. If the skirt is already just above the knees when we are trying them on, how much more above the knees are they going to be in a few more months after she has grown some? Unfortunately going up a size doesn’t work. The clothes are then usually to big. The length is right but they are way too big around the waist. It’s not a pleasant experience to shop for a girl. Boys are so much easier. But then men are not as sexualized as women are.

The “just below waist” or “low waist” styles come high enough above my hips to cover everything (even when seated) but are not so high that they cut into my ribs (a big, uncomfortable problem with “at waist” or “high waist” pants). The trousers especially are great, not too snug but not baggy, and they come in petite sizes. I have a few pairs in different colors, I don’t think I paid more than $30 per pair, and I’ve gotten lots of compliments on them. Apparently they look more expensive than they are. As for jeans, I buy the bootcut short length. They’re the only ones that consistently fit, and they’re often on sale for $25.

I don’t know if you have an H&M near you, but I’ve found some absolutely beautiful A-line skirts there, knee-length or longer, for less than $30 each.

And at the other end of the spectrum, I have an 11-year-old niece who outgrew the girls’ clothing section last year! We have to shop for her in the Misses’ dept. (size 0-2) and trying to find something that doesn’t have a plunging neckline in that section is tough! She is tall, thin and has long legs and long torso. Last year we were able to buy her Misses’ capris and they fit her like pants, but now she’s shot up two inches and they don’t work for her anymore!

Dresses and skirts we gave up on–if they fit her in the waist, they were too short to be decent, if they were below the knee, three of her would fit in the waistband! Fortunately we have a friend who is an excellent seamstress and she makes her about three or four dresses a year. You wouldn’t (well, maybe you would) believe how many people approach my niece after Mass and ask her “Where did you get that dress?”

I can not find non hip hugger jeans for my almost 11 year old anywear. I recently went to thrift stores to find jeans because every place I looked had hip hugger/ low rise for girls. (she’s a size 12). Even if I put long shirts on her she hates them. She says they’re uncomfotable. It’s really rediculous.

No we don’t do weird sayings, words on the butt, immodest styles.

My daughter said to me recently “Mom, it’s getting really hard to find modest clothes.”

I haven’t read all the answers so I don’t know if anyone has suggested this yet or not. Have you tried the boys’ department? I buy my daughters’ jeans in the boys’ department because all the girls’ department has is inappropriate. Honestly, I can’t tell the difference between some types of male and female jeans. You can also add a thin bit of lace edging to the front pockets and make the jeans a bit more girlie.

I might be dense but what exactly constitutes classic children’s clothing? I am turning forty this year and some of my grade school pictures show me in rather short dresses that I would not let my daughters wear. Why my mom put me in those dresses, I don’t know. I’ve also seen old Shirly Temple movies in which, if my memory is correct, I believe that the child actress was wearing clothing that showed the bottom of her frilly underpants and I wouldn’t put my child in that either.

These are our rules, no short, shorts. No hip huggers or low rise jeans, capris are fine, no writing on chest or butt, no tight clothing, shorts are worn under play dresses, makeup is to wait until my daughters are 15(although shiny, see through nail polish is allowed), and-my hubby’s rule-no spaghetti straps unless they are worn under another shirt.

It was very difficult for me to find long enough shorts this year that didn’t shrink after the first wash.

Sounds like we ARE all built pretty similarly!
I’m exactly 5’0", wear a size 2. I usually get great jeans at GAP, the “short” version …
I think it just takes a little searching… find what works for YOU… it IS possible to find “modest” looking clothes practically everywhere! You don’t HAVE to buy the nasty styles that are in front on display… just shop around a bit… there IS stuff out there!

I am 4"10" wear a child’s size 12 or 14 in most pants. LOL the length of skirts is never a problem for me. On the tops I wear a size 10/12 in Missie’s size. It is the style that gets to me. I don’t dress like a “pop” star and don’t want to see little girls do so either.

I have three daughters and I teach elementary school. Shools have dress codes that preclude many of the immodest styles. Kids’ clothes can be both stylish and modest, you just have to avoid short skirts or shorts, and buy shirts about ten sizes too big or boys’ shirts.

I guide my kids as to what slogans or writing on shirts is inappropriate. They have no clue, but I steer them away from shirts with slutty slogans.

Inappropriate clothing abounds, but I find if we shop at the boys’ department we can find some suitable clothes. Sometimes I buy them boys’ clothes and don’t tell them it’s boys’, but my older daughter prefers to shop there for pants that aren’t too tight and big baggy shirts that are modest. She is curvaceous and very busty and little tight pants the teenytiny shirts in the women’s or girls dept won’t work for her at all.

My younger girls wear hip huggers and won’t wear anything else, but they wear big baggy shirts over them, so it’s okay.

I think if you teach your girls modesty from the beginning, you will have fewer problems. My girls don’t want the sexy clothes,.

I don’t allow anything that looks like an adult should be wearing it instead of a kid, or anything “Sexy”. The majority of the Mary Kate and Ashley line is forbidden. Bellys are ment to be covered up… no short shirts. I also won’t let her wear anything with the brand name on it of toys that are also not allowed (Like Bratz). Absolutely NOTHING that has a word written on the butt, I don’t care what it says, we don’t need to encourage everyone to stare at little girls’ butts!

I do allow shorter skirts if they are a kid style and if she wears matching “bloomers” under them so we don’t see any panties when she plays. She is really tall and thin for her age so If I get picky about hemlines she won’t be allowed to wear dresses and she loves wearing dresses almost every day.

As for make-up, she is allowed clear lipgloss(no one likes chapped lips!) and that Bling Bling glitter. I think 14 is a good age to allow other makeup if they get lessons first so it’s not plastered on like a clown.

I my have to give Old Navy another try. It’s been a few years since I last looked at them. Funny thing, I just checked their size chart. According to them I’m a size 1. I WAS a size 3 and I’ve gained weight. Gee, wonder how is it you can go down 2 sizes after gaining weight? I’ll have to go to the store now and see if this is true.

If our boys dressed in the latest fad, they wouldn’t look like any of the adults at our house, or their relatives’ houses, either.

Our kids get comfortable clothes that wear well, mostly in colors that don’t show mud stains. A few “cool” shirts with dinosaurs or firetrucks or something like that.

The button-front shirts and other stuff that they don’t wear outside can have some white or light colors on it.

I was talking to a friend of mine with a girl, and she said that her daughter hasn’t ever gone out in anything that showed her underwear since she wore diaper covers. If she’s wearing a dress, she has to have some kind of exercise shorts or tights on underneath. At the age of seven, it is only a matter of time before it all shows!

What is sad is when kids get a tough time at school for not wearing outlandish and inappropriate clothes. That’s why there needs to be a dress code, even in public schools.

With my toddler daughter (and with most toddlers) if you buy a dress one size too big, that usually is long enough and because it is a dress, it doesn’t look like the child is swimming in it. When my daughter actually grows into the size of the bigger dress I pack the dresses away and get the next size up so then those are long on her.

I always did that with my daughter (Until about 3 years old). One day I overheard my Grandmother telling somene else, “She always looks like a Mennonite child!” heh I thought… better that than many other things she could look like!
