I’m looking for some good TV shows or DVDs for my 3 and 4 year old daughters to watch. I would like to find something that has good Catholic themes and appropriate for their age. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.
 
As in… specifically CATHOLIC kids TV shows? Eh… nothing I’ve seen on TV.
Not to bash EWTN (because I LOVE the station), but the kids shows are just really bad…
Veggie Tales are kinda cute!

We just let our kids watch Disney Jr… Mickey, Little Einsteins, Chuggington… haven’t seen anything harmful there at all…
 
Our kids loved Little Einsteins.

They still watch “Arthur,” even though they’ve aged out of it.

The the Kratt brothers have child focused nature shows on PBS.

We don’t get Disney Jr. The main Disney channel stinks. May as well feed your kids nothing but Cap’n Crunch cereal for every meal.
 
Veggie Tales isn’t Catholic based, but it is Christian themed and teaches Biblical values and lessons. VT wasn’t around for my older children or I just wasn’t aware yet, but my baby liked watching. It is a very cute Christian series with humor and cute songs too.
 
I vote for Little Einsteins; mine watched that when they were young and it’s a great show.
 
Thank you for the replies. I guess the show doesn"t necessarily have to be Catholic, but I would like something Christian themed. I have heard that Veggie Tales is good. We’ll give that a shot and give Little Einstien’s a try too. Thank you.
 
You can never go wrong with Mister Roger’s Neighborhood. There is a new animated series, based on Daniel Tiger, maybe some of the other moms can give a review.

I second Veggie Tales. You’ll be singing along with the songs yourself and catching yourself chuckling at some of the humor. I love Larry the Cucumber.
 
I LOVED Reading Rainbow as a kid!! Haven’t been able to find it to show to my 4 year old except for VHS (WTH?). Anyway Reading Rainbow is great!

While filtering what kids watch makes a difference, it is even more important to limit how much they watch. There are studies that show that young kids who watch too much video, or play too much video game develop an impatience with the pace of everyday life. Their brain becomes conditioned to the constant action of the video. This impatience gives rise to the later diagnosis of ADD/ADHD once they are in school.
 
Nick Jr. is actually pretty good. I haven’t seen anything offensive there.

Well, sometimes there is too much “princess” stuff which I don’t like but not so bad overall.
 
I’ve never found quality Catholic children’s programming. Sadly, the EWTN kids’ shows are almost unwatchable. Very poor quality.

We like “Little Bear” “Max and Ruby” “Curious George” “Bob the Builder” “Little Einsteins” and “Backyardigans.”
 
If you don’t mind going back a few years.

I recently got from the library the old “Davey and Goliath” shows - claymation - from around the 1960s. My kids loved them. They were put out by a Lutheran organization, if i remember correctly.

And we just recently took out some old “Art Linkletter’s - Kids say the darndest things.” - from the 60s and 70s.

And just yesterday - we started watching (again from the library) - the “Little House on the Prairie” series. All my kids just love this series - and my younger daughter - (age 4) just feels a real connection. (The older kids have seen the series before - so we just started it over for the benefit of the 4 year old).

If you are willing to watch older series from this time period, I’m sure you can find some really good shows. (“Heidi”, many of the Shirley Temple movies - are entertaining for the kids and have good moral themes to them).
 
Daniel Tiger (based on Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood) is very cute. My almost 2 year old loves it. It’s not Christian themed, but it’s nice. I think it’s where he found his love of brushing his teeth. 😃 He also likes Kipper and Calliou on Sprout.
 
Count me in for veggie tales.

Great Christian show and it’s very, very watchable. The songs are catchy, the shows are very funny. Plus, it covers some great bible stories. You may find yourself singing along to some of the songs too.

Netflix streams some of the episodes…if you have a Wii or a PS3 or something. Otherwise…you can order the episodes online. Their website has all the episodes plus some pretty awesome bonus packages.

You can also get some of the more popular shows on DVD at Target or Wal-Mart at a cheap price.
 
Check out the “CCC Saints and Heroes” series. You might be able to order them online. They are a serious of outstanding cartoons about saints and heroes, including the children of Fatima, St. Nicholas, St. Francis of Assisi, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Ben-Hur, St. Patrick, and St. Bernadette, just to name a few. St. Francis Books (www.stfrancisbooks.com) has some of them, along with other Catholic classics for families and for children.

“Joseph: King of Dreams” and “Prince of Egypt” are also good movies for children, based on the stories of Joseph and his brothers and Moses.
