I’m reading THE FAMILY by Jeff Sharlet who mentions Chimayo, NM. I’ve never heard of this site. Apparently, a mysterious crucifix was discovered in 1813. Cures occurred. Visitors have adopted the habit of eating dirt where the crucifix was discovered. The dirt has been blessed and some seek its healing powers by digesting it.

What’s the Church’s position on this site and on “the dirt eaters”?
