Why do chimes sound as the bread and wine are consecrated? For people new to the Mass, like me, it is a little startling and distracting. I just wondered what the significance of it is and how long it has been included in the Mass.
 
the bells are rung to let all know what is happening. In older editions of the liturgy, the actions were not visible, and the consecration spoken in a low voice; only the altar servers would normally hear the celebrant.

The instruction to ring the bells goes back many hundreds of years, at least 700…
 
Originally, it was a signal to the tower bell crew to ring the church bell to let people who couldn’t be at the Mass know what was happening and offer their brief prayers at that point.
