Beijing, Jun. 06 (CWNews.com) - Chinese authorities have released a Catholic priest who had been arrested on March 30, the Cardinal Kung Foundation reports.

Father Zhao KeXun, a priest serving the underground Church in the Xuanhua diocese of Hebei province, was set free on June 1. He had been taken into custody after celebrating Mass in a private home in Hebei.

Chinese policy allows Catholics to worship only in the churches recognized by the government; the priests and faithful who worship in unauthorized parishes are subject to arrest. According to the AsiaNews service, there are currently 18 bishops and 20 priests in policy custody or under house arrest, unable to carry out their ministry.
