China to be short 24 million wives, study says

BEIJING – Abortions of girl fetuses are expected to leave China with 24 million more men than women over the next decade, according to a study that warns the imbalance will dash many young men’s chance at marriage and lead to increased crime.
China enforces strict family planning controls, including limiting most couples to having one child. Because of a traditional preference for male heirs, many families terminate pregnancies of girl babies in order to be able to continue trying for a boy. Infanticide of baby girls has also become a problem.
The study by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, reported in Chinese state media this week, specifically said such preferences were behind the ballooning imbalance.

“Sex-specific abortions are extremely commonplace, especially in rural areas,” the CASS report said. “The phenomenon of abortions of female fetuses is very serious.”
China bans tests to determine the fetus’ sex for non-medical reasons, but they are still commonly done, mainly by underground private clinics in the countryside.

This isn’t news, people have been saying it for years. Therefore, it isn’t a surprise to the Chinese government either. THAT fact is what is MOST worrisome.

It’s almost as if they were purposely building 24 million disposable men for something… THAT doesn’t sound good, now does it?? :eek:
 
The thing that truly amuses me is that they instituted this policy to lower population. With all these people having boys rather than girls, its going to go far lower than they realized. It takes two, people!

They will abort themselves into oblivion. They will reap what they have sown. My heart aches for the murdered children, but not for the Chinese people who have brought this upon themselves.

Actually, I don’t even really blame the chinese people as much as I blame the totalitarian government. There are a lot of women who choose not to follow their ridiculous population control laws and they have forced abortions by the state. Not to mention if a woman is found to have a girl, the husband can MAKE her get an abortion, or will kill the female child. The issue is incredibly complex…

A totalitarian regime typically worries far more about internal unrest than outside invaders (though the propaganda is usually inverted, trumping up external threats to try to unite the people). It MUCH easier to keep the populace from rising up if you don’t have millions of weeping widows to deal with during and after military hostilities.

Taiwan should indeed be scared. Siberian Russians should be even more so. Probably the largest undeveloped reserves of oil in the world are in Siberia and China is even more dependent on foreign oil than we are. That spells trouble someday.
 
My fear is for the women who are not aborted. When you have a surplus of 24 million men or so, it does not take a vivid imagination to think of women being used by or ‘shared’ among the men. Whatever the opposite of polygamy is called. I see two possibilities: either women will be treated like royalty because men know what kind of competition they will have for them, or they will be treated as a means to an end - to satisfy a man’s wants and to attempt to repopulate after the country cannot support its elderly. With so many baby girls murdered, it doesn’t seem likely that the country’s attitude towards women as disposable will change anytime soon.
 
This is one of the reasons our late Holy Father John Paul II fought so hard against communism. It’s policies are a handbook to lead a culture of death.
 
Wait and see how much more agressive China becomes with the imbalance on testosterone.
 
This is not as much of a problem for China as it may seem. In the United States, something like 1/6 men have never been married in their 40’s and society is not collapsing because of single men losing it.

Many people also marry several times, so one woman might end up being in a relationship with different men at different points in her life.

Chinese men will also have the option of inviting poor women from less developed countries to marry them and live with them.

The “sharing of women” that you describe is not a realistic view in my opinion, since men tend to be very possessive of women and few would be willing to share.
 
I don’t think the problem will end with “sharing women” it’ll end with “kidnapping, raping and selling women”.

But the phrase “The wages of sin is death” is very, poignant in this instance.

Maybe I’m just overly optimistic/have faith in humanity/etc…but I don’t want to believe it will come to that. I am having hope that the Chinese people will have learned from this, repent, and hopefully walk away from their leadership. 😦

I could not agree more. And because I feel so strongly about their warped cultural bias (pro-male; anti-female), I don’t have a whole lot of sympathy for the people under that regime. (The bias is not mandated by the gov’t, it’s shared by the culture; the gov’t “merely” mandates one child.)

Just keep in mind that it’s not all about abortions; sex-selection is also somewhat shaped by sexual behavior, which I won’t go into here. (Koreans also strongly prefer males & try to shape result before conception, more than after.) But I agree with the overall sentiment expressed by lizaanne. Perhaps that makes me cold.

Keep in mind though that lots of people have observed that China is merely the flip side of governments involved or “over”-involved in the reproduction of its citizens. (A gov’t which has the power to restrict abortions is a gov’t which, it could be established in legal argument, has the same power to order abortions.)

In 1968, Pope Paul VI also warned about possible abuses of power as a consequence of contraception gaining wide acceptance in Humanae Vitae (17):

“Let it be considered also that a dangerous weapon would thus be placed in the hands of those public authorities who take no heed of moral exigencies. Who could blame a government for applying to the solution of the problems of the community those means acknowledged to be licit for married couples in the solution of a family problem?
