Choosing a Missal

Hallo everybody.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. I have been trying to choose a Latin/English Missal (the Latin part is a must!) which would have both the Tridentine mass and the new one (Novus Ordo) as well as prayers, collects, readings (again, in Latin and in English) - like in the Roman Catholic Daily Missal 1962 juxta typica. Is there anything you could recommend? Or you simply cannot have both at the same time?

I’m fairly sure that nobody prints a single book that contains both the old and the new Mass. It would have to be quite a tome!

I don’t think you’ll get a Missal with both forms of the Mass in, I’ve certainly never seen one.

The EF Missals you get will have both Latin and English; typically the Mass itself will be in 2 columns with a side by side translation and other parts of the Missal will either be entirely in English (devotions for communion and confession, calendar of saints, summary of various Church laws…) or in side by side translation as the Mass (litany of saints, some other traditional prayers…). I’ve never seen an EF Missal for personal use that was solely in Latin (I have seen the big priests’ copies used for actually celebrating the Mass solely in Latin but I don’t think that’s what you’re after).

Your best bet is to buy two separate Missals, if you really want both forms of the Mass. You will not be able to buy an OF Missal from a reputable tradesperson now until the new translation ones are printed, although you can preorder one now.

All Missals for personal use will have the complete Mass, including propers and readings. You will usually have to get separate Sunday and weekday Missals, although it is possible to get the whole cycle combined in one (very large) volume.

I don’t know where you live/what is available, but I quite like both my Missals. For the OF, I use Collins and for the EF Baronius Press. The only caveat I would give about the latter is that I have only ever been to an EF High Mass on Sundays or feast days (and one funeral), I couldn’t vouch for how useful it would be were you to want it for Low Mass on weekdays. It is called ‘daily Missal’ but doesn’t seem to have the weekday readings in it so someone more knowledgeable than I am should be able to direct you towards one which does, should that be what you want.

The Collins Missal which I use for the OF is solely in English, I think with the order of Mass in Latin at the back, although I haven’t got it here to check, but it certainly doesn’t have any of the propers or readings in Latin. Pax Books does a Latin OF Missal but I haven’t seen one in a while so I couldn’t comment on it’s usefulness.

I do not think that such a double missal exists. Furthermore, if you live in the United States, I would wait until November to buy a new OF missal, since it will have the revised English translation.
