Choosing Marian hymns for the Assumption (Aug 15)

I think “Sing we of the Blessed Mother” is the best, and my favourite Marian hymn. Some others which I love include:

If you don’t know by now, I am a Protestant convert, so obviously, I’m going to love hymns.

Thankyou. I apologise for over-reacting :o

If we leave my previous comment out, then Marysann’s post is a fitting and well informed response to to both the hymn suggestion and the use of music from other Christian sources in a Catholic service.

Thankyou also for asking (earlier) for Marian hymns with good music. That was a very helpful request in this thread.

It’s a beautiful tune and has an interesting history:

CYRIL VINCENT TAYLOR (1907-1991) was born in Wigan, Lancaster, England, the son of a Church of England priest. A student at Christ Church, Oxford, he was ordained in the Church of England and precentor of Bristol Cathedral and later Salisbury Cathedral. During World War II, he was BBC’s producer of Religious Broadcasting and, while stationed in Abbot’s Leigh, he composed his famous hymn tune of the same name. In 1941 when he was working for the Religious Broadcasting Department of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) they had received complaints about the use of AUSTRIA (tune for the Austrian national hymn) during this time of war, a tune then set to “Glorious Things of You Are Spoken” (506). Thus Taylor originally composed his tune for that text.
