Choosing Patron Saint (Help)

Hello, I’ve had a pretty tough time choosing between Saint Paul and Saint John the Apostle as my Patron Saint. I have quite the relation to both, really, which makes this decision even more difficult lol.

I admire the second half of St. Paul’s life, he had such determination to spread the Good News. He knew how to hold his own and was very courageous when facing opposition. He’s also the Patron Saint of writers, missionaries and musicians. I love to write.

As for Saint John, he was the youngest - just as I am. When James and John “were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him” (Matthew 4:21b-22). He was called and he answered, as was eagerly ready to follow Christ and was a very humble guy

What should I do here?
 
Some options:
  1. Say to yourself, “OK, I choose Paul” and then see if you feel okay with that, or immediately regret it and want to make the other choice.
  2. Pray and flip a coin, heads it’s Paul, tails it’s John.
  3. See if you can have them both for your patron. If you’re just informally choosing a patron saint, it is fine to have two of them. I have several saints I consider my patrons in some degree or another. For Confirmation, I did choose just one.
  4. Consider that God might want you to choose someone totally different. St. Francis de Sales is also a patron saint of writers, for example.

I see a difference in the way you’re writing about them. Paul is someone you admire, i.e. he has qualities to which you aspire. John is “just as I am.” Might be something to consider.

Both types of relationships have value. Though I agree with all of Tis_Bearself’s post, honestly, I like #3 best: unless there’s some reason you’re limited to just one, choose both! They won’t be jealous. 🙂
