Hello,

Have any of you ever attended a Chrism Mass? I will be going for the first time and don’t really know what to expect.
 
In that Mass, priests will renew their vows of commitment. The bishop will bless the Oil of the Sick and Cathecumens and consecrate the Chrism

Ever since I attended the first time, I have kept it up every year. It is beautiful and inspiring!

It is hands down my favorite Mass of the year. I didn’t go last year due to health issues but I will be there this year no matter what!

As for what to expect, GoGoDiego has given the gist of it.
 
It’s a beautiful Mass! I wish I could go this evening.

The procession has many priests, seminarians, and deacons. I love a good, long procession! 👍

The priests and deacons stand and renew their commitments. The bishop consecrates the oils used for sacraments during the coming year. Our cathedral is usually packed.

From our parish, we have some of our teens going, as well as RCIA folks, and a few pastoral council members.
 
It’s a wonderful liturgy that I’ve only been lucky enough to attend 3 times in my life.

Ours was celebrated last week as our diocese is too large to allow priests to attend a Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday and return to their parishes for the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

Arrive early; I cannot stress that enough. And expect it to run longer than what you may be used to. Here in LA, our Chrism Mass is tonight at 7pm, but the parking (in the underground structure) and the seating inside the cathedral are usually gone by 6pm. All the priests of the archdiocese are in attendance, as well as representatives of every parish and those who wish to attend. Last year, our Chrism Mass ran about 2 hours, and it’s usually standing room only. This year the cathedral is livestreaming the Chrism Mass.

That said, you are in for an amazing Chrism Mass! It is one of the most beautiful and inspiring liturgies of the entire liturgical year. 👍
 
I just did last night!

I’ve gone the past 3 or 4 years.

If you usually attend a parish, like many do, where everyone responds and sings half-heartedly, you might need to cover your ears when you realize everyone in the church this night WANTS to be there and WANTS to praise God, and their voices fill the church like the beating heart fills your chest.
