another appeal for help for reviews of this book from those who have read the newest (6th) version, originally published in the 90s I think

proposed by a parish group for use and I need to know more about content before I can get hold of a copy

we had a book that looks similar in another parish and I don’t want to speak about it until I am sure it is the same book and author

help me out with your experience please

don’t need a recommendation of other good books (which you have been very generous with on another thread) but need to know quickly if there are issues with this particular book

I do know that Christ Among Us by Anthony Wilhelm was forbidden for parish use by the USCCB. I’ll try to find my inquiry to the USCCB and their response. That was a long time ago!

yes the imprimatur to the first and second edition was revoked in 1984 but this apparantly is several revisions later, so that is why I am asking specifically about the 6th edition, my copy won’t arrive for a couple of weeks and I cannot find it locally so I need to know before the group who wants to use it takes off. I don’t want to make accusations I cannot substantiate

so if there is anyone with info specifically on the latest edition please weigh in
 
Search Theological Deception in Christ Among Us; There were reasons to Remove The Imprimatur, and reasons Not to use it in RCIA/CCD. Some of the ideas are too “Modern” ideas of the Author, not in accord with Catholic Teaching since the Seciond Century consistently, on the Real Presence In the Eucharist.

supposedly all the defects were corrected which is why I am hoping someone who has seen the new edition can comment because frankly, I don’t believe it
 
Here is the answer I just received by email from USCCB:

Mr. Damien,

Regarding your inquiry regarding the status of the book entitled Christ Among Us by Anthony Wilhelm, the imprimatur was withdrawn in 1984. The text has been revised since that time, in 1996, but we can no longer find evidence that the revised text bears an imprimatur.

That’s interesting you are asking. I am in the process of writing a letter to our Archbishop to get one of our parishes to stop using it. It argues for women’s ordination, and has very problematic approaches to homosexuality.

I have the 6th edition in my hands right now (well, in my lap while I type this). pages 432-436 attack the exclusion of women from the priesthood as “evils assscociated with discrimination against women,” and goes on to selectively and therefore erroneously, have Pope JPII advocation women’s liberation, and the whole subject is worded in a way to cause doubt in the minds of those being instructed about the Church’s teaching about the priesthood, suggesting that, "many theologian do not find the theological reasons against the ordination of women convincing (p 434) and sarcastically asks the reader “if a female priest cannot represent the male Christ, how could the male Christ redeem females?” Goes on to lie and try to get the reader on board with the everyone is doing it argument on pg 435: “A majority of American Catholics of both sexes favors women’s ordination…and the percentage of those supporting it is steadily increasing.” Goes on to give the reader permission to question the authenticy and authority of what the Church presents on the issue. Goes on asking for women to the diaconate etc.

Also retains its previous errors on Transubstantiation, homosexuality, and sexual liberation. Totes the gay agenda line and promotes radical feminism while attacking the authority of the Church under the auspices of combating “clericalism.” I am sending a copy to our Archbishop with the problems highlighted. Every pastor must take a stance on problem books when resented with them, in accordance with a decree of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (1975), namely that “the Pastors of the Church have the duty and the right to be vigilant lest the faith and morals of the faithful be harmed by writings; and consequently even to demand that the publication of writings concerning the faith and morals should be submitted to the Church’s approval, and also to condemn books and writings that attack faith or morals.”

More stuff, despite the horrors of the Teri Shiavo case, the utter cruelty of starving people to death,the book has trouble stance on Euthanasia pg. 313. It wavers on abortion by question whether or not the life is a human being, pg314. Spouts the old “overpopulation” myth when it defends contraception and lies and misleads the catechumen on the issue telling him or her that “In this matter, as in anything, the Church has not spoken the final word, and a development of its teaching is quite possible in the future” pg. 402. The whole book is like this, it will spend two sentences outlining Church teaching, then two or more pages debunking or casting doubts on those teachings. Does this throughout the whole book. Promotes radical concilarism and modernism. Pg. 70 calls into question the Blessed Virgin’s Perpetual Virginity. The author hides behind the tool of “many theologians believe…” “most Scripture scholars agree that…” over and over again he casts doubts on infallible Church Teaching by employing subterfuge.

This is a very subversive and dangerous book. On pg 398 he encourages those engaged in active homosexual lifestyles to continue to receive Holy Communion! And on pg 399 argues that the clear teachings of Scripture about homosexual acts are debatable and may not refer to sodomy at all (smells of ELCA and PCUSA doctrine?).
 
I am still in process of comparing the current 6th edition to the 1984 version. It is not really my job and I need to be sure of my facts before confronting the very senior person who is sponsoring use of this book.

I wrote my letter and sent it first to the Cathedral’s bookstore and they received the letter at 3pm (I had sent it certified/return) and by morning Mass the next day the book was no longer in the store window and off the shelf.

Basically it presents what Catholic Church teaching is, then presents what “modern theologians” believe. One of the editions justified abortion within 10 days of conception. The sin commited at Sodom and Gomahorra was really the sin of “lack of hospitality”, and not anything to do with any homosexual act. The fact of losing the Imprimatur and the Nihil Obstat should be enough not to use the book in any Catholic parish.

are you speaking of the most current edition?

I asked anyone who has seen the most current edition, does it have an imprimatur, have the deficiencies been remedied, I already know about the problems with the older editions.
have you seen the newest edition?
if I had it available to check myself (they still have not arrived) I would not be asking
in any case it is out of my hands, being handled by “a higher authority” so I thank all those who responded, it helps to have support, even remotely
 
Looking at the Amazon preview it appears not to have an imprimatur. When you do receive this book, perhaps you can give us an update.
