As a high school student I am challenged to respond to a class topic: Why was Jesus born Jewish, What connection do we as Christians have with the Jewish people, and what in common do we have regarding our faith? Help.

The OT for one thing. Except for the deuterocanon, which either they never accepted or denied around 90 AD.

Jesus is the fulfillment of the Jewish faith. He is the “passover lamb”. Also our liturgy is taken from the Jews.

There is so much deeper that I could go into it, but I have to leave, so someone else take it up.

We, as Catholic Christians, regard the Jewish people as our Elder Brothers and Sisters in the Faith.

One thing that Catholic Christians believe is that the Old Testament prophesises the New Testament. In other words Jesus was born a Jew, of the House of David, because the Messiah promised by God was promised to His Chosen People.

As Catholic Christians, many of our ancient Traditions and Rituals have their roots in Jewish Traditions.

The Jesus was born in the house of David and from the line of Jessie. Both decendents of Jacob (later named Isaeril) who established a conventant with God.

We, Christians, are lacking in our love and understand of our Jewish roots. Jesus was a Jew. He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it.

I believe it was Pope Pius XI that said “we are all spiritual Semites.”

God began by making covenants with His creations to restore us from the Fall. First, with Noah (individual), then with Abraham (family or tribe), and then with an entire people, the Jewish people (with Moses as their God-selected leader). When Christ came, He fulfilled the Jewish law and made His Church available to people of every nation. God could have selected other peoples to do this with, but since He selected this way, we can be sure it is the most perfect way. At any rate, the Jews are God’s chosen people and we should pray very much for those who do not recognize the Messiah is come because those to whom more is given, more is expected. It is really cool, though, IMHO to have a group of people who had a covenant with God still in existence carrying out Mosaic traditions today.

Why was Jesus born Jewish?

Because he was the Jewish Messiah, the long anticipated Christ.

Jesus was a Jew.
Mary and Joseph were Jews.
The Apostles were Jews.
All the earliest Christians were Jews.

So your question should be: how did this fulfillment of the Jewish Old Covenant by the Jewish messiah, result in a New Covenant which includes all of us non-Jews?

(But as the Pope said, we aren’t really non Jews: we are all spiritual semites.)

An Orthodox Jewish friend of mine tells me that Mass is the only Christian service that resembles what goes on in the Synagogue.

Perhaps you could visit your local Jewish house of worship to see the similarities?

If one accepts the Incarnation of God in Christ Jesus, then it follows that to become Incarnate God would have chosen one specific group of people and then prepared that people to receive Him. It was, as Dafalax has shown, this one people, the Jews, that was thus prepared through a succession of covenants with God.
