This year I have noticed more and more materialism. I don’t know maybe my eyes have been opened. Anyway, How can I avoid all this and put Jesus back into the season? I have a few ideas
  1. Happy birthday cake for baby Jesus
  2. decorate with advent wreath, angels etc.
3 tell story of the real St. Nick
4 read about the first Christmas
    5 watch such themed movies
Any more ideas? I have a 16 month old son and would like to start traditions. Thanks.

My wife and I were/are at the point you are at. We want our sons to have Santa and all that but also know what Christmas is really about. We have gifts for Jesus. That means my wife and I have the boys pick out a few toys and we wrap them. Then we have the boys take the gifts to the local shelter and give them away. Now that is hard to do with two little boys, but they actually enjoy giving them away. Of course we tell it is Jesus’ birthday and we watch the Nativity every year. I am not sure they understand it as of now but they will eventually we pray.

👍 great job at keeping CHRISTmas Christ focused. Makes me 😃

I would recommend the movie idea, as i have several cherishing themed movies to watch during h the Advent season. Try to limit television watching, commercials are everywhere this time of year! Also look into K-Love radio station (online, too), all Christian music, no commercials!

Great question! Our family has also struggled with this and we’ve come up with a bunch of different small t traditions to keep the focus on Christ. If you are interested you can about them here:

HOW WE KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS

God bless.

to me Christmas without Christ is meaningless.

get to confession, try to get closer to God, and celebrate, I think that is all you need to do.
now about my family we have the tradition in december to pray the rosary and then put baby Jesus on His bed on the “nacimiento” besides you could make one, i think that would be good.

The JESUS documentary film is a good idea, just make sure that no interruption during it.

Surprisingly, at our local cheap store, I noticed that nativity scenes sold far quicker than last year - and by a few weeks. I tend to think that the simplicity of the messages of Pope Francis might be having a positive affect and perhaps in a special way on non Catholics who are quite unfamiliar with our Catholic Theology.

It’s been a more, and more thing for awhile. Commercialism of the holidays is idolatry in laymen terms. The increasing idolatry of their GOD’s is ever apparent and most are blind.

One thing that I really am concerned about is the celebration of mass with a known appropriation to pagan celebration with a pine tree representing the symbol of the holidays. One would think that this is inappropriate to display in our place of gathering.

As it is explained in the following excerpts…

Yule or Yuletide (“Yule time”) is a religious festival observed by the historical Germanic peoples, later being absorbed into and equated with the Christian festival of Christmas. The earliest references to Yule are by way of indigenous Germanic month names (Ærra Jéola (Before Yule) or Jiuli and Æftera Jéola (After Yule). Scholars have connected the celebration to the Wild Hunt, the god Odin and the pagan Anglo-Saxon Modranicht.

Terms with an etymological equivalent to Yule are used in the Nordic countries for Christmas with its religious rites, but also for the holidays of this season. Yule is also used to a lesser extent in English-speaking countries to refer to Christmas. Customs such as the Yule log, Yule goat, Yule boar, Yule singing, and others stem from Yule. A number of Neopagans have introduced their own rites.

The reference to paganism is a concern and I would rather be safe than sorry and abstain from any affiliation by connection that might offer improper conduct in the “walk” and celebration to the best of my ability and the grace of GOD.

The custom of the Christmas tree developed in early modern Germany with predecessors that can be traced to the 16th and possibly the 15th century, in which “devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes”.[1] It acquired popularity beyond Germany during the second half of the 19th century.[2] The Christmas tree has also been known as the “Yule-tree”, especially in discussions of its folkloristic origins.[3][4][5]

Praise be to GOD the heavenly father and his son lord JESUS CHRIST forever>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I would also cut out expensive, big ticket gift items and stick to hand or homemade items. I only send religious Christmas cards and wish people, “Merry Christmas!”.

I have a self-inking stamp for envelopes at Christmas: “Keep Christ in Christmas”
