Christ in the soup line

This is my latest watercolor I did for a members show for the art organization I teach for. The theme of the show is indigo. The scene is inspired by a evening I spent out on soup patrol on a very cold night last December. I’ve obscured the features of the people as that’s how they affected me that night. They emerged from the dark, blending in marvelously with their environment. Individuals yes, but in memory remain an anonymous line of hooded and bearded figures. The scene is set at our last stop. A parking lot of one of our Catholic parishes.

Thank you! I don’t have a website as of yet. I post new stuff on FB from time to time and I’ve got some stuff scattered around CAF. This painting is a little different for me. It’s my first night scene, I don’t paint people that often nor do I make religious/social statements. Most of my work is merely pretty pictures of birds and landscapes.
 
Tad, this is wonderful! I love it. You should definitely experiment some more with this mode. God amongst the poor. Very Vincentian.

If you ever make prints, I’ll buy one. ❤️
 
Great job! I don’t know much about art but I know when I like it. You said the background is a Catholic Church in a nearby parish? The detail reminds me of moorish architecture.

I too have just finished my Masterpiece. I think that I shall call it “Crack the Whip”.

Thank you. I’ve got a few more paintings rolling around in my head on a similar theme. The Casa Maria soup kitchen is just a few blocks away. That place left a lasting impression on me as well. I’m also thinking of the 40+ asylum seekers staying at the former Benedictine monastery right now, plus we’ll be taking a trip to the border early next month, so who knows what might come out of this.

. I was thinking of printing some cards and donating them to Casa Maria, but I’m not really concerned about the commercial aspect at this time. If you would like a print let me know. We do fine art printing at my day job so I can get you one at cost. Just let me know what size.
 
One of my students said the same thing yesterday. It’s one of the older parishes in town so I don’t think it’s a mistake to see the influence.

Thank you! It was after Christmas last December. We were out as part of the 'immersion experience’of the Catholic social justice program called ‘Just Faith’. One of the local parishes has a little 4-seat mini van with a tiny soup kitchen in the back. We visited 3 locations that night and fed @70 people. That was actually a low number as it was a very cold night and the shelters had just opened. I was struck on how these people would appear from the shadows. It was a really moving experience.
 
That’s a lovely thing to do printing them out and donating them! I feel the same way about the commercial aspect as I also do paintings. I quite like giving them away. My parish used one of my paintings on a prayer card at a bereavement mass recently and to see people using the cards as markers in their Bibles or missals is just a lovely feeling. Maybe you should consider putting a prayer or devotion on one side of the print perhaps in the language of the asylum seekers. God bless you

I’ve a question tad. Simply out of curiosity is Christ the 6th figure back in the soup line? It that figure seems to be robed and has the appearance of a halo about the head (my opinion). Or is it that the soup server sees Christ in all of those in the scene? Both and, either or, none of the above. Very moving scene-Thank you for sharing. Blessings.
