Thank you!

I’m related to a retired Divine Word Missionary priest who worked in Ghana for 50 years, so seeing this is very special to me.

:blessyou:

No. They’re receiving Antidoron.
Blessed but not consecrated bread. I’d never heard of that before. Interesting!
Because the antidoron is blessed, it must be consumed only when fasting.
The canonical regulations of the Orthodox Church state that the antidoron should be consumed before leaving the church, and that it should not be distributed to unbelievers or to persons undergoing penance before absolution, but variances are allowed.

Clearly “variances are allowed” – I’ve been given antidoron at a number of Orthodox parishes. I typically have fasted even though I’m not receiving Eucharist, some in parishes where I’m known to be Eastern Catholic, and others, in a parish where I am not known, they don’t know my status.

We Russians have antidoron at every Divine Liturgy. It’s placed with wine where you can take both after receiving Eucharist. Then again at the end of Liturgy when we go up to kiss the priest’s hand cross we get more. In my parish the priest doesn’t hand it out, We take it from the table where it was set with the wine. I’m so rarely in the Russian Orthodox for Divine Liturgy I forget if I’ve had the priest hand it to me there at that time, when leaving Liturgy. Definitely I’ve received it from Greek Orthodox priests at that time at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral and at the conclusion of the Orthodox Christian Fellowship DL.

We also have Artoklasia service of the 5 loaves, when we receive that blest bread handed to us by the priest. In both these cases you kiss the hand of the priest which you can see most of the choir doing in that video from Ghana as they received the antidoron. A number of times when I’ve been at the Greek Orthodox cathedral for Artoklasia there were so few people there I ended up taking a large amount of bread home and sharing it with the RCIA. 🙂
