The local “Christian Outlet” store has maybe one NAB Bible on their shelves, and that is it as far as anything specificially Catholic is concerned. But you can buy a nice zippered Bible cover for $9.99. Or a WWJD mug.

I am a partner in a Catholic book store.

We used to have a “Christian” book store in town but they didn’t carry Bibles in stock. I guess because Bibles often don’t move as quickly as other stock. On the other hand our Bibles move out fast. We are constantly re-ordering.

Their Protestant customers had to come to us.

I sell them the RSV Bible, Ignatius edition, leather cover, very nice. I told them the NT is the same and they didn’t have to read the “extra” books if they didn’t want to.

I won’t order Protestant Bibles.

There are lots of good reasons to shop locally when possible though. It is possible to read the Amazon reviews without purchasing from them.
Thank you. Everyone wants a local store and the only way to have one is to actually support it.

Can you buy cheaper on Amazon? Probably. But you will pay shipping. Because of our preferred customer status with many of our vendors, often shipping is not charged to our customers.

I’m a huge fan of supporting locally owned businesses, and if the type of store I’m looking for is not in my community than I try for a small business website. I try to stay away from the big chain type stores as much as possible.

I look at supporting the local Catholic bookstore as building up the Church and my surrounding parish community. I try to frequent any of the advertisors on the back of our bullentin as well.

I definitely would try my hardest not to buy from Amazon after the pedophile book controversy that happened recently.

I’ve bought a lot of used books from Amazon. This makes my book budget go farther and from what I can tell many of the sellers are also small businesses.

Anytime it has been a small business involved in my order from Amazon, they have included their own business card in my package and I have then been able to order directly from that small business and cut out Amazon all together.

Of course my store’s location is a plus. We’re right next to the church and we open after daily mass. 😃

We also advertise in the church bulletins in the area and on Catholic radio.

Now if we could just make enough so that I could take a salary especially since my job will be gone soon.

Prayers for that would be welcome. :bowdown2:

If the original poster resides in the U.S., there may be a “Parables” bookstore in the area. These stores have a two or three Catholic sections. So one can find not only Bibles such as the Catholic edition of the NRSV (my favorite), but also RCC acceptable Bible Studies materials, dvd’s, etc.
I refuse to shop at those stores. They are as anti-Catholic as the rest.

Yup me too, I have a half a dozen or so cards and e-mail addresses from this. I actually have never received an order from a seller that didn’t include info on how to contact them in the future.

I live in the Bible belt and have had on occasion gone into “Christian” book stores and cannot find any Catholic Bibles in them. The other day they had a poster up saying Over 400 years of Bible study commentary available.Should I ask the employees or the manager if this is a Christian bookstore why dont you carry any Catholic Bibles…or just let it go and walk out?
I had the same problem here, I went to 3 surrounding counties looking for a Christian bookstore that sold Rosaries and/or Catholic Bibles. Each of them acted shocked that I had such a request. I brushed it off at first (since it was nice having a day out with my hubby), but after about the 8th store I finally asked to speak to the manager. Turns out one family owned all of the “Christian” book stores in the region and they made a policy to exclude Catholic items from their inventory…mystery solved.

I finally found ONE store that was independently owned and they are amazing people. It’s a husband and wife and it’s a small store, pretty much a hole in the wall. They’re not Catholic, but as soon as I said “Rosary” the guy had two catalogs pulled out from behind the counter 🙂

Or they actually can have motives to discriminate against Catholics. A couple that we are very good friends with wanted to purchase the local franchise of one of the big Christian bookstores that the owner had recently put up for sale and the owner refused to sell to our friends because they are Catholic. It was quite an eye opener to say the least.
Is that legal?!

I asked at my local bookstore 😃 They had a lot of books on Catholicism… in the cult section. And they were books along the lines of “Why Catholics are unsaved heathens”… I can’t remember any actual titles but they were all something along those lines. She stuttered for a few minutes and then said they could order one for me if I’d like.

Buy your things at Catholic Bookstores, or Catholic sites. Support the real deal.
This is what I’ll be doing from now on. I’m pretty sure there aren’t any Catholic bookstores here unless one of the churches has one. What are some good Catholic sites to purchase from?

Thank you for the links!

StTommyMore- I’m checking out the blogs in your signature, so far I’m enjoying them 🙂

I’ve decided I’m going to stop buying books from Borders. I’ve been to two Borders the past month and I notice that the Catholic sections are sparse, and all the blatantly anti-Christian Atheist books are put right next to the books where I can’t avoid them. Whereas when I go to B&N, I don’t have that issue. I wrote to Borders with my concerns and they responded to me a week later(today) with a form letter that has nothing to do with my mail.

I’m not important, so neither are they.

i am very fortunate, i have 2 Catholic bookstores in my home town. what a blessing! however if you have none. im sure that the staff at the protestant bookstore would be happy to order anything you might need. we have a few protestant bookstores in my town also, and they sell rosaries crucifixes and the like. but in the bible belt, it may be a little tougher. think thats tough though. stop at a truck stop run by fundamentalist in arkansas, and try to buy a pack of cigarettes! not going to happen…they went out of buisness shortly thereafter. apparently didnt realize who their clientel were. lol! peace 🙂
