Anyone familiar with this book? Thoughts?

I’ve been asked to read it.

So far, a lot of it is really pretty good. It is based on a rather different (from Catholicism) perspective on salvation, sanctification, and justification, and he has some harsh words about Catholicism and sacraments. For example:
[T]he Christian view of marriage… does not here, nor anywhere else, teach, as the Roman Catholics teach, that marriage is a sacrament. There is no teaching whatsoever anywhere in the Bible to support that idea. I defy anyone to produce such a scripture. Marriage is not a sacrament. (page 40)
Sheesh.

That aside, it is an exploration of Ephesians 5:22-33, and hammers home how a Christian marriage is a reflection of the relationship between Christ and the church - I didn’t capitalize “church” on purpose, since it reflects Lloyd-Jones’ meaning - e.g., what it means for a wife to submit and a husband to love, etc.

I’m concurrently reading Scott Hahn’s “Swear to God”; it’s pretty insightful. I looked at Tim Gray’s “Sacraments in Scripture” and didn’t find that as helpful. Good resources on this would probably be a good topic for another thread. 🙂

Curious about this book, as well. I’ve found that there can be much value in the contemporary Christian marriage and pre-marriage books but there remains so much outward disdain toward Catholicism that I’m left with a bad taste in my mouth, even as I’m able to recognize the inconsistencies and pull out the valuable portions.

As for Mr. Lloyd-Jones, perhaps it’s time he cross references his NIV for a moment and checks out the etymology of the words “sacrament” and “mystery”.

From the Douay-Rheims:

[31] For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they shall be two in one flesh. [32] This is a great sacrament; but I speak in Christ and in the church. [33] Nevertheless let every one of you in particular love his wife as himself: and let the wife fear her husband.
