Christian music that crosses those imaginary lines in the sand.

From a nice conversation with Burrito Brother, he inspired me to start this thread. I listened to this wonderful Catholic radio station, and noticed that there was quite a bit of Protestant music on it. I heard the classic hymn of Amazing Grace written by the staunch Calvinist John Newton to music by Michael Card. So, what’s up with that Catholic radio station which also hosts the Catholic Answers radio program?

Please read the link on Michael Card…

Of course, I believe the line in the sand which seperates us from Mormons cannot be crossed.

Some non-Catholic religious music is fine. Some of it is not. That which is acceptable can and should be played. That which is not should not be played.

Personally, I am not a fan of praise and worship music, so none of it floats my boat.

I would be more shocked if a Catholic hymn was played on a non-Catholic station.

The writer of the song may or may not make it less playable. For example, many Catholic hymnals contain songs by Luther or Wesley (such as “A Mighty Fortress is Our God”)

Amazing Grace has issues that I will not get into here

American Catholicism seems very ecumenical, and so does Catholic Answers! 👍

At times, yes. Sometimes it is in a good way, sometimes it is bad.

True ecuminicalism is a good thing. Ignoring truth to gain acceptance is bad

Music in many Novus Ordo parishes is basically indistinguishable with Protestant “praise” music or hymnody, or so goes the common traditionalist complaint (one which I personally agree with, with no offense meant to any music directors of N.O. masses). How far we have gone from the days when Mozarabic, Ambrosian, Gothic and other chant-forms nourished the Church and connected it to the dominant Byzantine chant in the East. I guess I’m a stick in the mud, but I’d rather listen to this guy sing Ambrosian chant (or these people sing Mozarabic chant) than listen to some piano plink out “Amazing grace” or something along those lines.

As I’m sure I’ve written before (or at least thought really, really loudly), if I were to judge the faith purely on its aesthetic beauty, I’d be Orthodox, not Roman Catholic or Protestant.

As for theological differences, that’s harder to explain away…I know there are various good arguments against adoption of historically-Protestant hymns by Catholic churches. Why they apparently aren’t effective or listened to by people who can put a stop to this sort of nonsense, I don’t know. I’m just some guy, so feeling depressed about the whole thing is about all I can do (I did once ask a priest I knew about this, and as with everything else related to praxis, he pointed out that Latin Mass was offered once a month at a different church; greaaaat, but how does that excuse having a jazz band at the local N.O.?)

I knew there is as much disunity in the Catholic Church as many Protestant churches…

The disunity in the Catholilc Church is not the same disunity as in non Catholic churches. There can be different opinions about what music is played at Mass, or which private devotions a person does, or even abortion. The difference is the teaching of the Church is not in disunity. Whether individuals are in line with the Church or not is not disunity in the Faith. Any Catholic who supports abortion is excommunicating themselves from the Church.

No Catholic goes and starts a new church as they constantly do in non catholic churches. The unity is held by the Chair of Peter.

In the West society is more liberal and whether Catholic or not have the mine set of trying to be an individual when it comes to the Doctrine/Dogmas of the Church. This is not acceptable, but difficult to change. No matter what an individual feels about a particular belief, they have no power to change the Truth of the One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

This is not true with non catholics, they split over any issue they disagree with. There is no authority in their churches. There is no real leader among them that is why Jesus knowing this gave that authority to Peter the first Pope to be the Shepard over His flock.

Huh? How did you get that out of what I wrote? I’m talking about music because you’re talking about music. I don’t think there is “disunity” so much as it is a fact that some people like one style of worship, other people like another, and maybe some others like another still. Some are more permissive or liberal in what is acceptable within the context of worship, some are not. It doesn’t necessarily reflect on any sort of underlying disunity in doctrine. I’ve still to this day not attended a TLM (the place where I live now doesn’t have them), but I’m still a Catholic.

No one is dividing the Hearts of Jesus or Mary. Where do you get that idea? The Bible says that Mary’s heart would be pierced. I believe that when referring to Mary’s Immaculate Heart it is just saying it was pure and full of love for all.

You don’t know anything about the Catholic faith and really should read up on what it teaches before making comments that make no sense. Catholics only worship Jesus, but we do love his Mother as he commands us to do. It is also commanded that all call her Blessed, do you?

Of what I personally read on Mary as co-redemtrix on Catholic Answers, it sure seems Catholics are divided on the issue. Of course Mary was blessed according to Sacred Scripture.

The music industry is Protestant, Jewish and other for the most part. Protestants have generally had more disposable income to buy records. African-Americans, who gave us R&B, gospel, jazz, rock n’ roll, etc., are mostly Protestant. The British invasion was British and it is a Protestant country. How likely are Catholics to take Protestant pop music and make Christian, Catholic pop music out of it?

What I found interesting was that a very sound Catholic radio station played quite a bit of contemporary and historic hymns from the Protestant community. I believe the Catholic station is valid since it plays Catholic Answers on it. I actually enjoy Catholic radio tremendously.

Answer me this. Where in the Bible does it say that the only type of religious music should be played with a piano or a orgin? Drums, guitars, horns, bongos, syntisisors and so on are fine but it may not be for everyone. At my church we have both a traditional worship service with old hymns and a pipe organ and our contempary worship service has the eletronic drums, base guitar, regular guitar. piano, syntisisor, different types of brass instaments, and violins and we sing secular religious songs.
See there is no wrong way to worship with music as long as it is clean. Rap, Jazz, Rock,
R&B are all fine. They are geared to the type of people who like that kind of music. I don’t see a problem with it as long as they are worshiping God and all he stands for. Would you rather have them listen to the cursing and all the other disrespectful things that are going on now or would you rather them listen to the same type of music but with a religious meaning behind it without all the nasty words?

It’s amazing how many times you feel the need to tell yourself that. 😃

The whole lack-of-unity among the Protestant tradition must be getting to you. 😉

I would have to disagree agreeably that our hearts should not be divided between Jesus and Mary. It could be in violation of the 1st commandment.
2nd Adam, you dodged the issue of the post you quoted and commented on the signature…nice. You seem to do this a lot, much like the time you edited someone’s post to say something completely different, and then answered your own newly revised question which had absolutely nothing to do with the question the poster actually asked of you.

Are you talking about music in general, or about music in a liturgical setting?

My niece who was married several years ago was forbidden by her pastor to have any music in the ceremony that was not Catholic.
