The book has a selection from the office of readings, not the full year (for that you need the four-volume set). For someone who is just getting started with the LOH this is a good book (in fact, many deacons have it and use it since, for us, the Office of Readings is not required, only Morning and Evening prayer).

I have the same one you do, and yes I would recommend it. It has some of the office of readings, just as Deacon Ed stated. I was using Shorter Christian Prayer, but I prefer this version because the hymns have their music notation.

As a diaconal candidate I am strongly encouraged (if not required) to pray morning and evening prayers. The book you describe is the book I use and will continue to use the rest of my life.

I have found that the LOH (morning and evening prayers) very enriching. In fact I will have to say that it is my favorite devotion. I believe you will find it enriching. The LOH is the official “prayer” of the church. All clergy are required to do at a minimum morning and evening prayers.

it will take you time to figure out how to use the book but keep at it…a lightbulb will click on and you will be doing it without problems.

I LOVE morning and evening prayers.

Blessings

You could–and should–ask your priest for instruction in particulars. It can be confusing to attempt it just by reading the rubrics on your own at first.

My wife and myself are Secular Order Discalced Carmelites, and we are required to say the morning and evening prayer, from the breviary. For years, we used the single version, “Christian Prayer, The Liturgy of the Hours.” We didn’t get the four volume set, because two copies of it would run almost $300. However, last year we managed to get one set free, and another for $120, so we now both have the 4 Volume sets.

My advice to the OP, and anyone else is, the single volume Christian Prayer, The Liturgy of the Hours, is complete for morning and evening prayer. You can use it in a group, even with people who have the four volume set. Most people only have time for morning and eveing prayer, and perhaps night prayer, and the single volume is all they will ever need.

However, if pride or your desire to do the Office of the Readings is really strong and you have the cash, go ahead and get the four volume set.

Myself, I’ve only done the Office of the Readings twice in the past year, and it wasn’t really necessary to get the four volume set.

Also, the single volume is easier to use. Don’t think that you won’t have to flip back and forth in the four volume set, because you do.

And last but not least, the single volume has the actual music, not just the words, to the hymns. The four volume set has only the words. However, I never sing the hymns when praying alone anyway, so its a non-issue for me.

I’ve been enthusiastic enough at times to purchase the full 4 volume set, but will settle on the the one volume Christian Prayer after an audit of my time (as fulltime husband, father, etc. along with career). I can’t create the time to do much more than morning and evening (and purhaps night) prayers.

Anyway I’m ready to pull the trigger on an online purchase of the one volume Christian Prayer but i’ve seen the UK version of the LOTH (3 volume Divine Office) and am intrigued because i was praying with a similar translation at universalis.com. Then i found the condensed version of the UK version, Daily Prayer, seen here:

Any thoughts?

On a similar note, what is the difference between the one volume Christian Prayer and Shorter Christian Prayer (which is what I have)?
