Christian Prayer question

I have done a search on LOH questions and Christian Prayer questions and can’t find my particular query.

For those of you who are using the Christian Prayer single volume…

I have been praying it for a while now. But one thing that is bothering me and that I can’t find is the responsory that come with the first and second readings in the Office of Readings. On page 35 on how to pray the office it says First Reading: biblical, with its responsory; same for the second Reading. What am I missing?🤷 I hope I’ve made myself clear and that I’ve asked this in the proper place, hopefully someone will respond 🙂

I was waiting for someone to respond to you…but nobody has yet. After you posted this, I went to look at my Christian Prayer which I’ve been using since October but alas, there is no corresponding Responsory anywhere. So I looked in the Music section and there are Responsories for Morning and Evening Prayer but no Office of Readings Responsories.

I think they are an mystery or a misprint. Honestly, I’m about ready to upgrade to the full Liturgy of the Hours, switch to the Monastic Diurnal, or hold out for the Baronius Press 1962 English-Latin Breviary set. Praying the Christian Prayer has been very fulfilling but it has moved me to want to go further with it.

Christian Prayer isn’t really the volume to use if you want the Office of Readings. I “graduated” to the full set, one of the reasons for which was to pray the OOR as well.

If you do use the selections from Christian Prayer, you will just have to do without the responsories.

I would like to have the full volume set. But got Christian Prayer with the knowledge it only has selections for OOR & Daytime Prayers and that was OK with me because of the expense of the LOH set. And I thought because Christian Prayer mentions the OOR readings with responsory’s I thought it had them but I just couldn’t figure out where they were. Now I know they just aren’t there. I will continue to use it though until which time I can get the set. Yes I love the Office of Readings as well and would love to be able to have all the selections and the responsory’s.

The complete set’s books are available one volume at a time. Perhaps you can consider ordering them on a staggered basis throughout the year. Ordinary time is coming up, so you may want to order Volume III as soon as you can. Or if you can afford, order Volume II as well, since there are only a few weeks before Lent begins.

For the Office of Readings, I have been using www.universalis.com. The readings are all there and you can get them on your computer, PDA, cell phone, etc. Sometimes I use my Christian Prayer and then connect my iPod Touch up to Universalis and bingo, I’ve got the day’s readings.

Now that I think of it I could even use my Wii to pray the Liturgy of the Hours with…

Regardless, I do want to “upgrade” because reading/praying from a computer screen is not the same as holding the liturgy in your hands. This is another reason I also use a hand missal for Mass…both the Traditional and Modern Roman Rite usages. There is a lot to be said for the extra tactile sense you get from uniting yourself to the liturgy of the Church - whether it be Mass or the LOTH.
 
Regarding buying the volumes one at a time I did find Henningers sells them seperately. I didn’t think you could buy them seperately I have always seen them in sets. And a good idea!!

I used to use Universalis and ebrievary; since I got Christian Prayer I don’t use them as often. I like to be comfortable and prayerful and reading them from the PC is not condusive for that; and a reason I finally got Christian Prayer. I sometimes will print out the OOR from Universalis. They don’t have antiphons or responsory’s though. ebreviary does but you can only get Friday’s and Sunday prayers without subscribing.
 
If you’re not going to do the Office of the Readings on a regular basis, but only morning prayer and evening prayer, don’t bother buying the four volume set, unless you have the extra $120 plus to shell out. The morning and evening prayers in the Christian prayers is the same as the four volume set.

I just got the four volume set after using the Christian Prayer volume for the past 15 years. So far the only difference I’ve found is the Office of the Readings.

You can get paperback supplements for the OOR that contain all the readings.

The Daughters of St. Paul used to publish a volume of the complete Office of Readings to complement their one-volume Christian Prayer. It’s now out of print, unfortunately.
