I was an Evangelical Teenager in the 80’s when Christian Rock was pretty cheesy but I listened to it anyway.
Petra was probably the most well known and they had some pretty deep lyrics and decent guitar. Although the production wasn’t very good.
However there were some really good Christian artist.
Phil Keaggy is one of the best guitarist in the world, Christian or otherwise. I saw him do an acoustic concert about 15 years ago and was blown away.
Rich Mullins was a poet and painted pictures in your mind with his songs.
The Album that was groundbreaking in both quality and depth was DC Talks 1995 Album “Jesus Freak”. It was a really high quality recording and tackled issues such as racism.
Another great Christian Rock album was Switchfoot’s “A Beautiful Letdown”. “Vice Verses” is also a great album. Jon Foreman is the best Christian lyricist since Rich Mullins. You can tell much of his lyrics come from personal struggle.
