Christian Rock?

I think what celticsfan1983 was getting at is that nobody really “defines” what punk is but Christian punk would be refusing to conform with the ways of the world, pop cult, etc.
To say that to be a punk you have to have no leader or you have to be anarchist or you have to conform to some rules even if they’re nonconformist rules is an oxymoron in it’s self. Of coarse then you could say anybody is punk but I wouldn’t take it that far. Catholacism generally doesn’t conform with society and if you like punk rock than I guess the possibility of a “Christian Punk” is feasable.

That and I think what Milliardo is saying is that Christianity doesn’t mesh well with the Punk lifestyle, which has merit. However, when it comes to genre of music, there’s no reason why you can’t have Christian punk, rap, or whatever style you choose.

Music is music. It’s how you use it that counts.

To put this in perspective, the Church used to condemn polyphonic music (more than one note at the same time) because it originated in paganism. 😛

RED, you can’t forget red. One of the most original, and best christian bands out there.

RED, go to youtube, search it, and get ready to Rock!

I know they’re sort of on hiatus at the moment, but what about P.O.D.? 👍 The guys rock out, have some great lyrics and are true to the faith. I also understand that while most of them are evangelical the drummer, Wuv, is Catholic.

I saw them at Music as a Weapon in Melbourne late last year…awesome.

Hi,

I know this post is old but I hope someone can help me with this. What about MercyMe? I’m new to Christian Rock and I only heard one song for them called Here With Me. It doesn’t sound offensive to God. It’s actually beautiful. Is it okey for Catholics to listen to this band?

Thank you.

Although most Christian rock is not performed by Catholics, is it still ok to listen to? And also, does anyone know any Christian rock artists that are Catholic? I’d appreciate some assistance. 🙂
I tend to associate “Christian rock” with schlock - untalented and boring. As for rock artists who are Catholic, I don’t know of any. Chris Hillman, bass player for the Byrds is Greek Orthodox I think - and practicing. Sometimes I tell people I like Christian music, and when they ask which artists, I answer: Mozart, Bach, etc. 🙂 They are usually confused by this because they don’t consider classical music to be “Christian” because its not from a modern evangelical protestant.

MercyMe is totally fine, don’t worry about it. Enjoy your clean Christian music.

🤷

To each his own, as far as music genres go. I find myself listening to a mixture of lots of different genres these days. When I do listen to rock, it has a tendency to straddle the line between Christian and secular work. I will say that Christian rock fares a lot better compared to secular rock than Christian anything else tends to compare to its secular counterparts.

Although “rock” and 'pop" tends to be interchangeable sometimes in American usage for many Mercy Me nor most Contemporary Christian music (CCM) is not what comes to mind when someone is asking about Christian Rock specifically.

I’m not sure what interchangeable means. Can you explain it more please? Do you mean they don’t always follow christ’s teachings in there lyrics?

No, he’s talking about music genres. Mercy Me is clearly Christian, but it’s not exactly hard rock. That would be more like Fireflight or Red.

Oh! Thank you for explaining. So what about Red? I forgot about them. Are they good? Cuz I heard lots of non christians listen to their music and pretend it’s not religious. Does that mean Red is not a good christian band?

The same is true of Fireflight; I find that their lyrics ring true for a lot of people, not just Christians. They’re often more about emotions and life events than purely about Christianity. You could say they’re never opposed to the faith, but often focus on other things. God and Christianity are often implied- perhaps mentioned in a line, or the song may be addressed to God, or about a Christian value. The fact that non-Christians like it is testament to the fact that the group is decent musically as well as lyrically.

I don’t think there’s anything really wrong with their songs, but if you’re looking for songs that explicitly celebrate Christ, you’d be better off looking at stuff like Tenth Avenue North, Sidewalk Prophets, Casting Crowns, etc.

Thanx a lot, you’ve been very helpful. I will be checking these bands. 🙂
