I was thinking about the issue of adoption–vis-a-vis homosexuality but that’s not really germane here–and a question occurred to me. Are Christian Scientists (and to a lesser degree Jehovah’s Witnesses) legally permitted to adopt since their faith prevents them from providing necessary medical care to any children they would adopt? If they would be legally allowed to adopt do you think they ought to or that such an adoption would you support legislation to prevent them from doing so since their parenting demonstrably harms children.

N.B. - I have no intention of turning this into a debate on marriage and homosexuality or gays adopting and would request others not turn it into one either.

I don’t know, that’s an interesting question, though. I’ve heard that people adopting kids out of foster care or from the state can be required to promise not to corporally punish the children, but I don’t know about being compelled to provide medical care. I hope someone’s able to answer.

In Christ,

Ellen
