Hi Shun. Someone has probably already mentioned it, but the Catholic Faith is the original Christian Church, founded by Jesus Christ. Here is something that may help you.

Do you have any idea when your church was founded and by whom? You may find this enlightening:

If you are a of the Catholic faith, Jesus Christ founded your Church in the year A.D. 30.

If you are Lutheran, your religion was founded by Martin Luther, an ex-monk in the Catholic Church, in 1517.

If you belong to the Church of England (Anglican), your religion was founded by King Henry VIII in the year 1534 because the pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to remarry.
If you are a Presbyterian, your religion was founded when John Knox brought the teachings of John Calvin to Scotland in the Year 1560.

If you are Unitarian, your group developed in Europe in the 1500s.

If you are a Congregationalist, your religion branched off Puritanism in the early 1600s in England.

If you are a Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in 1607.

If you are a Methodist, your religion was founded by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1744.

If you are an Episcopalian, your church came from England to the American colonies. It formed a separate religion founded by Samuel Seabury in 1789.

If you are a Campellite Christian Church, your religion was started by Thomas and Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone at a revival held at Bushy Creek.

If you are a Mormon (Latter-day Saints), Joseph Smith started your church in Palmyra, N.Y. in 1830.

If you worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in 1865.

If you are a Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year your religion was founded by Mary Baker Eddy.

If you are a Jehovah’s Witness, your religion was founded by Charles Taze Russell in Pennsylvania in the 1870s.

If your Church of Christ, your church broke of from the Campellites in 1906.

If you are Pentecostal, your religion was started in the United States in 1901.

If your organization is “nondenominational Christian” your group started in the 1960s

Above all, pray every day. Ask that the Holy Spirit will lead you to the Pillar and Foundation of Truth. And we will all be praying for you as well.

I’m currently reading the history of the Chrisitan Faith and have gotten through the first 300 years, and it’s so obvious that it is Catholic. They called it Catholic to battle Heretical groups also calling themselves Christian yet denying the trinity, etc.

I noticed something Shun…you keep saying that you are Christian, and want to be Catholic…as if you were no longer being Christian. I need to correct that. Catholicism is the fullness of Christianity, and being Catholic is automatically being Christian, just making the statement that you belong to the universal faith as delivered by Christ through his Apostles, and their successors.

Catholicism is not a “denomination” but it is the faith handed on…every other Christian Denomination is Protestant, and branched off from Catholicism, this Shun, is the historical, indisputable fact. God bless you in your journey and continue to share. This forum is full pf protestants searching, and some of the best Catholics are converts to the faith.
 
I do wish you luck in your journey. I myself have thought about reverting back to Catholism, Though I see it as converting from agnosticism to Catholism. Though I would have to wait untill I get my Batchellors in Psychology to go through the process, but it wont stop in my journey of exploring the faith ;).
 
Shun, you seem to be a smart kid. Do not go against your parents but respect them. Tell them politely that your are searching for the truth, and if their denomination have the truth, then they don’t need to fear what you are doing. Tell them that you are praying for the truth and the Holy Spirit will guide you in your earnest search. To search is to explore all avenues, including their denomination and Catholicism.

Check out all the tracts in Catholic Answers, they will help you with the basics.

Ask God not to harden your heart, but open it to His grace. God Bless you.
 
Hi Shaun, I’m really glad you’re here and I hope that you can continue coming and researching your faith, wherever it leads you.

I converted myself after 6 years of marriage to a wonderful Catholic man – and as a teenager I attended an anti-Catholic church with my formerly-Catholic mother who would have sounded just like your father had I brought up converting – Over the years though, my mother has softened a lot and I’ve learned much about this faith I now have so that she supports me more than I ever thought she would have * – this might seem like a lonely road (wonderful to have your Grandmother to help!) but I’m sure they will come around and support your faith in the end.

don’t have those in the bible becuase those books were not written by Jesus’ disiplies.

As for the “extra” books in the Catholic Bible – this is actually a glaring mistake of Martin Luther’s in the 1500’s – the 7 books that were removed were Old Testament books – They were in Jesus’ Bible – they weren’t written by Jesus’ disciples because they are old Jewish books – not New Testament, post-Jesus books. (Think Moses times, not Peter and John)

Now these 7 books were taken out by Martin Luther mainly because the oldest manuscripts they had weren’t in Hebrew or Aramaic – they were in Greek – so they seemed “questionable” to him – and he took them out and set them at the end of the Bible –

Here’s the kicker – In the 1980’s archeologists dug up some caves around the Dead Sea – you may have heard tell of the “Dead Sea Scrolls” – in these caves, in old clay jars, they found the earliest copies of all the books of the Bible – we’re talking early early Christians hiding these books to keep from being martyred for their faith – and you know what? They had all 7 of these “extra” books too – and they were in Hebrew and Aramaic – Far older than the Greek copies that Martin Luther had – dating back to the Beginning of the church age –

So Martin Luther was wrong – and now nearly every Protestant faith lives on less of a Bible than they should because of this mistake. Not only that! But these Old Testament books contain some very compelling prophesy of Jesus’ coming that Protestants can’t refer to – Many times in the New Testament Jesus or one of his disciples refers to a person or a passage from one of these books AND there are things that Protestant’s claim are “un Biblical” that Catholics believe in (like prayers to saints, and some concept of purgatory) that are in THESE books –

amazing, no?

I was totally baffled when I found this out and still find it hard to not shout it from the mountains when someone asks me why I converted – just this seemingly small thing is so huge in the end it’s crazy.

I’d also like to HIGHLY recommend “Rome Sweet Home” by Scott Hahn – it’s very easy to read and makes you thirsty for more – It’s a book that I tore through quickly and cemented by resolve to always be a member of this church.*

I saw my grandmother for Mother’s Day!!! I was surprisaed that there wasn’t an argument about Catholicism. And while my paretns were busy, I asked my Grandma for a book that I forgot to take home, it is called “***Confession of a Roman Catholic **" It is written by Paul Whitcomb. Paul was pretty much a “throughbred protestant”. He was baptized a Methodist. He states in the book that " In conscience, I had to become a Catholic.” *(pg. 4) I dont really get that part…I am liking the book so far. Its great!
 
I am in a situation similar to this…my friends exposed me to the Catholic faith and now I wish to convert…however my parents are less then thrilled about my new found faith.

I’m happy to learn that there was no confrontation on Mother’s Day regarding Catholicism. You may want to try to focus on the Love of Christ which you all can share and emphasize through your actions your desire to do as Christ would have you do, live a life of Charity (love) towards your parents with great big heaps of respect for them and obedience to what they ask. If you take on this imitation of Christ, walking as he walked, in humble obedience, I think it would be hard for them to see your desire for Christ as anything other than a good thing.

The only time we are exempted from obedience to true authority (such as parents, teachers, bosses) is when they request that we do something which is immoral or against our Faith. This does not mean that if your parents ask you to attend a Sunday Service with you which is not Catholic, that you can therefore refuse. This would be disobedience. But if they asked you to profess to something you don’t believe in, this would be against your Faith and you could respectfully refuse. I wish you luck and pray that you and your family draw ever closer to God through your explorations.
