I am a faithful Christian/Catholic and have an interesting question: Has anyone ever had the thought of “What if Christianity is not true?” I read a lot of apologetics books, and really do truly and honestly believe that all of the evidence points to the fact that Christianity and the Bible are true. I have strong faith and have made the decision to be a Christian, but since there is an element of faith and hope (since everything cannot be proven 100%), has anyone ever had the worry of “What if we might be wrong?” I believe the evidence is there, I want to believe, I do believe, but am sometimes afraid of what would happen after death if we were wrong. Any feedback would be appreciated, as I would like to hear others’ thoughts on this. It isn’t a “doubt” but more of an issue of having hope and being afraid that all of our hopes as Christians do not eventually happen after death (going to heaven, etc.).

I’ve asked myself if Christianity and God and all we believe are true or not. But I’m not worried about it because, with the help of the Holy Spirit and God’s grace I try to cultivate the virtue of hope, which is what our assurance of salvation is based on.

And if it’s not true, what will it matter when we’re dead? If there’s nothing after life then it won’t matter because we won’t exist. Much better to want to do God’s will and be formed into the image of Christ if Christianity is true and we must face God’s final judgment, yes? 😉

I received my confirmation of the truth of the faith via the Holy Spirit, as we all do. Yet, He speaks to each of us differently, according to our hearts. There are intellectual truths that can lead to faith, but they are all trumped by the Spirit. As Christ said, we worship in spirit and in truth.

One place where you may receive reinforcement of the truth of the faith is in the presence of Truth Himself. Go before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and let the warmth of His love melt away any remaining doubt in your heart. Your mind will be convinced ever after. Oh, you will have those days, but the Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

I think everyone asks this question at some point…One cannot know the answer “what if we are wrong”…unless we have a viable option for what is right.
I mean we have no “Then” for an IF…THEN… logic statement. See what I mean?

IF we are wrong and there is nothing THEN - nothing…

IF we are wrong and the god of some other definition exists…(as a creator god)…It seems his foundation would still be in “Love” - for that is the most creative force in the Universe and so if we, as faithful Christians, follow the Law of Love…THEN - we are still in good shape.

IF we are wrong and the god of some other definition exists…(as a creator god) but is NOT founded on Love…well then…in my estimation we would not exist in the first place so - - - moot point…

So - I’ll stick with the faith founded on Love, with the hope of everlasting life.

I think of that question from time to time, “What if Christianity isn’t true”, but in doing so, it forces me to reevaluate my faith over and over again, continually reaffirming me that it is true.

This is basically the same train of thought I go through when this problem comes up.
