Im sorry to use that word to describe it but that is really how i feel about it. Christianity is basically anti sex and pro violence. After years of studying christianity and the various denominations i have come to that conclusion. Please do not be mad at me. I am speaking out of depression so i am not trying to insult. I am merely saying how i feel. I think christianity is repulsive. It has a sick obsession with virginity, a hatred towrds anything beautiful or pleasurable, yet at the same time a love for violence and death. Youknow when i found orthodox christianity i was very happy because i thought " here, finally a religion without any atrocities". I knew that orthodox christianity was also very negative about sex ( only slightly less than roman catholicism). But i was willing to look past that as long as it didnt have any atrocities. But i was wrong. I learned that the OC supported slavery, got in bed with the state, and etc. I even learned that the coptic orthodox church castrated young boys against their will
Abhorrent. So basically having premarital sex was considered a grave sin but capturing bpys and mutilating them before selling them into slavery was acceptable…

No major christian church ever stood up to the state. Except ofcourse when the state started to be lenient on sex and sexuality. Then it fought the state tooth and nail. The catholic church supported feudalism all the way. They anathemized socialists yet never anathemized corrupt monarchs or capitalistic dictators. Only after the church saw that socialism was gaining support was when they came out with their reaction of " distributism". Where were they for 1800 years?

Now with that being said i dislike christianity but i like the bible. After actually reading the bible i found that christianity is quite different. Right now im basically just following my own spirituality based on the bible. I believe in one God. Thats it. I dont know if i even believe in the trinity or jesus divinty anymore. Im just believing in what i can prove logically. But i just cannot accept christianity 😦

I encourage you to read your Bible. Don’t read what others say about the Bible, but read it for yourself, after prayer asking God to help you understand. Seek Him. Don’t read what others have written about Christians, most are haters, the anti-Christ, who would condemn followers of Christ for not being perfect. Surprise, no Christian is Perfect! Only Christ was! The Bible will show you all the flaws of Moses, Abraham, Peter and Paul, etc. They were flawed, we are all flawed. In Hebrews chapter 11, there is an account, that even though flaw, they had faith in God. This faith was accounted to them as righteousness. Don’t lose your faith because of flaws you see in others.

1John 2
Christ Our Advocate
2 My little children, I am writing this to you so that you may not sin; but if any one does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 and he is the expiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And by this we may be sure that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He who says “I know him” but disobeys his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him; 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly love for God is perfected. By this we may be sure that we are in him: 6 he who says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

A New Commandment
7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment which you had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new commandment, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. 9 He who says he is in the light and hates his brother is in the darkness still. 10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and in it there is no cause for stumbling. 11 But he who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

12 I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his sake. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, children, because you know the Father. 14 I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If any one loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world passes away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides for ever.

Warning against Antichrists
18 Children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come; therefore we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out, that it might be plain that they all are not of us. 20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and know that no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is what he has promised us, eternal life.

26 I write this to you about those who would deceive you; 27 but the anointing which you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that any one should teach you; as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie, just as it has taught you, abide in him.

Children of God
28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that every one who does right is born of him.

The Bible comes from what the Holy Spirit revealed to the Holy Catholic Church. He inspired the Bible and then inspired the people to put the Bible together (which manuscripts to keep). He also gave us all the Doctrine and Dogma of the Catholic Church.

When looking at the Holy Catholic Church focus on Doctrine and Dogma. All Doctrine and Dogma is Holy and Pure because it comes from God who is Infinitely Holy and Infinitely Pure. Not all that has happened in the history of the Church is infinitely Holy and Pure. The Church is a hospital for sinners.

God gave us Holy Confession

John 20:22
So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23"If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”

God gave us the Holy Eucharist

John 6:54
So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54"He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55"For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.…

Holy Orders were given to the first Apostles in John 20:22 and passed down since then. Every priest has Holy Orders that trace back to God on Earth.

Your issue seems to be with sin. You look at the sins committed in the Church, or what you perceive were sins, and say “look - sin! It can’t be from God.” You are right. It is not from God if it is sin. Sin exists even in God’s own Church, the one He Himself established.

Our HRCC, Holy Roman Catholic Church, is about the most peaceful religious entity you can find in the 21st Century. The Church serves both Catholics and non-Catholics in hospitals, schools, hospices and social service agencies around the world. If I were put off by history, such as the era of the Crusades, etc, then I would certainly not be happy living in a country where 150 years ago slavery was lawful. Do I agree with all of the Catholic rules concerning artificial birth control and the idea that being gay is a disorder - of course not, but I pray everyday that I might understand. Thank God that the Church has weathered 2000 years of ups and downs and continues to be a major force in making the world peaceful.

Lastly, but the most important is that, as a Catholic, I am able to partake of the body and blood of Our Lord - the most precious gift ever. Peace be with you.🙂

Man oh man. Someone’s had a field day with you.

Let’s start with getting you safely over the idea of virginity being too much in focus. And while we’re at it we’ll tackle the ‘sexual obsession’ bit too.

Let’s start with the obvious.
  1. The best thing for a child to have is both a _______ and a ______. I’ll let you fill in the blanks. (Just so it looks like we’re playing fair at this. In case the question catches you off guard you can PM me for the answers.)
But like all lazy quizzes the answers come out clean in the next question anyway.
  1. So the best way to make sure that a child gets both a mom and a dad is to restrict _________ before ____________.
  2. And the best way to restrict sex before marriage is to make sure everyone stays __________ until they are married.
  3. Now staying a virgin is a hard thing. It needs a lot of work. And support. To fight off this really strong drive. So the Church spends some time helping with that. Like a bit of effort is put in there to help. So is it a good thing or a bad thing to get help with hard problems?
See, God doesn’t care about sex. He cares about the next generation growing up under the best conditions. It’s us who care about sex. Far too much sometimes. So the rules have to be strong because the will to break them is strong.

Hating Christianity because it says NO when we want to say YES? Well I guess that’s sort of understandable. But man only if that was all Christianity was about. I mean where did you sort of slip past or forget all of the ideas of forgiveness? And love? And peace? And goodwill to even your enemies?

I’m not sure where you’re getting your lead in this. But whoever it is is doing a pretty lousy job with their homework.

I mean you have to dig a bit to tag on violence and death to the Church as a main plan. Yeah it’s happened. But usually mostly when guys who haven’t done much homework on their own have gotten in charge. I mean can you really picture St. Peter running amok with a sword chopping left and right? Nah. That guy was all heart. I mean yeah there was the ear incident. But Jesus warned him about those living by the sword dying by the sword. So during the one and only time that a Christian is written up as having done any kind of hurt to someone on purpose in the Bible he is told not to do it. So I think you’re maybe right to be mad at wrong-headed killings and the like. But you’re definitely wrong about saying all that happened as all true Christians think it should. It’d be much more consistent to be mad at those who did the killing and then blamed the Church for their inspiration. Because those guys obviously have trouble reading.

I’d give you two more shots across the bow here. But I’m short of time.

Peace someperson.

I won’t get into this too deeply, but only to say that Christianity is only as good as the people who profess it. Peace and prayers.

You take any group of people and you can find pretty much some of them have done repulsive things. If cruelty and other repulsive things were confined to Christianity than Communist nations and non-Christian nations would be paradise on earth.

What you feel repulsed by are the atrocious acts committed by people and that is normal. You can go to pretty much any religion and you will see atrocities committed there too.

All groups of people, maybe with the exception of babies, have had members which have done repulsive things.

Very well said, Trident. The only thing I might add is that “Christianity” itself should not be judged by the actions of many of its members who at one point or another fail to live up to its ideals. I wonder if the OP has really taken a look at the positives of sexuality within the context of Catholic teaching? Has s/he taken time to understand Theology of the Body, and positive approaches such as those presented on www.chastity.com? To me the pressure of the hook-up culture to have sex or you won’t be allowed to sit at the cool kids’ table is the negative and stupid thing. I have several decades of my own and vicarious life to appreciate what a blessing the chaste life is.

The devil lures many into sexual sin because it’s so easy - take a strong human appetite and convince the person with a few easy lies that it’s impossible to live up to the ideal, till the person caves in. But once the person learns to spot the cheap tricks . . . Those of us who see through it and refuse to give in in the lust arena, the devil has to try to tempt toward other evils - envy, anger, gossip, greed, etc. Or to scrupulosity and despair, perhaps. He doesn’t fight fair. Nobody is immune from temptation, and we fall sometimes and if we’re smart we’ll recognize it and get up, confess our sins, and start again. This is the Jubilee of Mercy. God’s Mercy is available.

It’s also good to remember that the sins of the past that aren’t being committed now (for example, castrations) should not be what the Church is judged for in the present day at all. How would any of us like it if we had done something wrong, renounced it, and someone kept throwing it back in our face? I daresay we wouldn’t like that at all.

Do I agree with all of the Catholic rules concerning artificial birth control and the idea that being gay is a disorder - of course not, but I pray everyday that I might understand.
If you do not agree, it is different than not understanding. If you do not agree, it is heresy. If you do not understand, but agree, it is not heresy. I struggled with a corrupted conscience when I came back to the Church. God, in His infinite Mercy, has been helping me with this and A LOT. I did not understand because my conscience was corrupted, but I agreed because I knew that I would be guilty of heresy if I did not. I also believed God literally gave the Keys to the Kingdom to the Catholic Church and that the Holy Spirit guided the Church into all Truth just like Christ said He would. I had to submit that my feelings were wrong and the Church was right (agree).
Lastly, but the most important is that, as a Catholic, I am able to partake of the body and blood of Our Lord - the most precious gift ever. Peace be with you.🙂
If you are guilty of heresy, and I am not saying you are, you can not receive the Body and Blood of Christ. It is literally His Body and Blood. If you literally disagree with the Holy Spirit, with full knowledge and deliberate consent, on issues such as birth control and same sex attraction (different than “being gay.” One can not “be gay” without practicing homosexuality. It is like someone “being a fornicator.” Only if they actually are fornicating are they a fornicator. It is concupiscence, a result of the Fall.) being disordered (IE you support homosexual unions) - you can NOT receive Holy Communion. If a person willfully commits heresy, they are willfully committing a grave sin. If done with full knowledge, it is a mortal sin. If a person knows they are committing a mortal sin and receives Holy Communion, they are committing sacrilege.

From the Catechism on the First Commandment:
2089
Incredulity is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it. "Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same; apostasy is the total repudiation of the Christian faith; schism is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him."11

People who violate the First Commandment may not receive Holy Communion.

As I said before, I am not saying you are committing heresy. You might have meant that you do agree but do not FEEL it is right. If you submit to the Church’s teaching despite your conscience being corrupted thanks to the Fall, you are not committing heresy. However, if you literally disagree, you must choose between submitting to the Church and receiving Holy Communion or not submitting to the Church, willfully sinning, and not receiving Holy Communion.

I love you.

Another important point made - and by a person who has lived it. Street cred that can’t be ignored or wished away. 👍 Between the “sex positives” and the “politically correct,” there is a lot of misinformation out there. And the culture can shout a lot louder sometimes. We must quiet ourselves to hear the still, small voice of God within. ❤️

Christianity is beautiful.
Jesus died for you because He loves you.
Don’t let anything distance you from God.
Keep reading and God will speak to your heart.

Thank you for your very sincere post, MS. I’m 62, so my musings about ABC are purely academic, however; my core conscience is clear on my disagreement with the CCC concerning LGBTQ humans. I’m blessed to have an awesome spiritual advisor who is always there for me. I’m praying that you find happiness and peace in our ever changing world! Merry Christmas!🙂

‘How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilisation’ (an excellent series!):
m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZDj5nM0KbdUTEpoka1oyAR8BtHfIiVJm

Jesus existed and He was put to death for “blasphemy” because He claimed to be One with God (“I AM”). Either:
a. God doesn’t exist, and therefore Jesus was a lunatic
b. God does exist, and Jesus was a blasphemer
c. God does exist, and Jesus is One with Him

I accept the latter, for various reasons. Consequently, I accept whatever Jesus has revealed, whether it be the Trinitarian nature of God, the existence of angels and demons etc.

To be a Catholic is a blessing beyond words; it is intellectually satisfying (contrary to common misconception) and spiritually invigorating. Only a good God could produce the Saints of the Catholic Church.

Frank Sheed - one of the Church’s greatest theologians - wrote that outside the Catholic Church you will find a half-Saint at best. I think he was being too generous, if anything (assuming that there is, in fact, an objective standard of moral goodness, as well as human freedom… Two truths that I take on faith, primarily).

God is charity. Only then does morality find a solid foundation.

It sounds to me as though you can’t accept the sins of those who claim to be Christian. This is not a bad thing, but it is important for you to separate Christ and His Holy Bride, the Church, from the sinful persons who are a part of her.

It also sounds like you need to add Theology of the Body to your reading list!

The CC values human sexuality and procreation more than any religion you can find.

I would also just like to throw out a suggestion to the OP, if s/he hasn’t already, to read C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters. Much wisdom and wit there about how the devil tempts Christians, and maybe easier to wrap one’s mind around presented in the form of a fictional correspondence between the junior devil Wormwood and his uncle and mentor Screwtape. 😉

I agree. I think everyone should read The Screwtape Letters. It helped me a lot to understand evil and how it works. It’s a great book and a quick read.

Another great book by C.S. Lewis is Mere Christianity. Probably the best explanation of Christianity I have ever read. (this one is NOT fiction - Screwtape Letters is fiction but based on fact.)

Read both!

Hey, I meant to reply sooner but i was busy. Thats a nice try except that is not the reason the christian churches oppose premarital sex. Christianity just opposes sex out of pure sexuaphobia. Because that still doesnt explain the celibacy requirements placed on priests and the fact that celibacy is viewed as a higher state than marriage. Celibacy is not biblical. The jews and Muslims are pro marriage whereas apostolic christianity reviles marriage. In all fairness the protestant churches have moved away from this celibacy fanaticism and they have ditched monasticism. But even the prostestants and other reformed christian religions are still pretty negative about sex. That is why the roman Catholic church does not allow priests to marry and the orthodox church prefers celibate priests. It has always been held that sex is somehow an impediment to holiness. Even though this view is actually anti biblical. Adam and eve were upright and holy yet they were commanded to have sex. They were not taught to shun the material world. Christianity is full of greek Gnostic and stoicist innovations. Ive always held monasticism in contempt. I never understood why purposely seeking out pain or discomfort to get favor from God was a good thing. I dont think God works that way.

However the straw that broke the camels back for me was not its anti sex views but the fact that at the same time christianity was pro violent too
The early church fathers openly advocated for chattel slavery. They actually introduced laws to curb manumissions. They did little to nothing for the poor working people.
When I was a Christian it broke my heart that God apparently cared more about what consenting adults do behind closed doors than actual violence or injustice.
If I am wrong in any of my assesments please point out where and why.

Peace.

Thank you. I dont have time now but i will give it a read later.
Though ive read something similar. It was a book by the patriarch of Alexandria. It was on diabolical wars. Basically how the devil tempts people. It was interesting. Im not Christian anymore but still a God believer so even to this day I take advice from it.
