Christianity not united, losing faith on possible unity for Christianity

I think Manny is discouraged because of the Catholic/Orthodox unity thread. Well that is understandable. The Orthodox wouldn’t go along with any reunion if it meant papal infallibility. So even if most of the bishops signed on to reunion the laity would resist those bishops and commune with bishops who will never unite with Rome under such a condition like the Patriarch of Moscow. We’ve been through that before with Florence and Mark of Ephesus.

However it may be possible to uinte if the pope of Rome recants infallibility and commands the worlds catholics to do the same. Catholics would have to go along with the pope in order to remain catholics. But I know that there isn’t a catholic out there that doesn’t dread that idea so the schism will be permanent.

Protestants don’t care about eccsiatical unity only doctrinal unity with the teachings of the protestant reformers. So why would catholics want unity rather than conversion?

Yeah well I agree to some extent. Protestantsim and Orthodoxy will always exist because those faiths aren’t based entirely on one man. So as long as a group of people are around that profess those faiths the two religions will keep going. Catholicism, as it is believed today, is not that way though. As soon as the pope changes his beliefs the entire church is forced to follow him. So hypothetically if the reigning pope converted to Orthodoxy (unlikely but not impossible) then every member in the catholic church would have to become Orthodox or seperate from the pope. Either way the Roman Catholic Church as we know it would cease to exist. That is the only hope for unity that I can see and it isn’t likely to happen.

And forget about the protestants. They will always be around. The best catholics could hope for is mass individual conversions from it. But the trend is the other way in this point in history.

The sad part is that each of us will give an account for our discord between the brethren. Our excuses will amount to a hill of beans. In current conditions we can only hope our ignorance will be taken into account. (I point at myself with that last statement)
 
I’m an elder in the Presbyterian church and I pray for unity among all Christians every day. I believe it can happen, but only of some stiff-necks on all sides are willing to put Christ first, organizational matters (man-made) second. I personally hope that Martin Luther is burning in hell for what he wrought. But that’s all in the past now. I have great admiration for the RC and Orthodox faiths. Especially the RC. But, some will have to sacrifice some pride for unity. On both sides. Most of the problem is simply that-stiff necked pride. I have always felt that it will take some great event to begin the process of humility. I don’t know what, but I have hope. I have to. Roanoker
