***Christianity on upswing in Japan
**Gallup poll: Traditional religions show decline among teens

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A poll conducted by the Gallup Organization has yielded some surprising statistics on Japanese attitudes toward religion, morality and spirituality.

According to a media advisory obtained by ANS, among the findings from one of the most extensive surveys of the country ever taken was a Christian population of 6 percent, a number much higher than reported in previous surveys.

Researchers were also surprised by high numbers of teens who claimed the Christian faith, while the traditionally dominant religions, Buddhism and Shintoism, though still claimed by many adults, suffered declines among teenagers. Some respondents answered that they belonged to more than one religion.

Of the 30 percent of adults surveyed who claimed to have a religion, 75 percent considered themselves Buddhists, 19 percent Shintoists, while 12 percent considered themselves to be Christians.

Researchers were especially surprised at the large number of Japanese youth who claimed the Christian faith. Of the 20 percent who professed to have a religion, 60 percent called themselves Buddhists, 36 percent Christians and followers of the traditionally dominant Japanese religion, Shinto.

Calling the numbers “stunning,” George Gallup Jr. who assisted with the poll, noted of teenagers: “These projections mean that seven percent of the total teenage population say they are Christians.”

The poll was conducted in association with American Trademark Research and MJM Group in 2001 for use in a documentary that is expected to be released later this year.

“According to the social scientists in Japan, this was the single largest study ever attempted,” said Bill McKay, one of the documentary’s producers and project research director. “The entire study examined preteens, teens, young adults, adults and seniors.”

“In my 50 years of polling, there has been no study that I would consider as important as this one, because it provides insight into a fascinating culture,” added Gallup.

“When they saw the design of the questionnaire, Japanese experts argued that the Japanese would never answer the socially delicate and/or the highly personal questions,” observed McKay. “However, it was our professional hunch that the Japanese were ready to talk and when they did they told us more than we had asked for. The data is the most revealing look behind the face of Japan and shatters many WWII myths of the Japanese culture.”

The poll also delved into popular attitudes toward a variety of subjects related to morality, spirituality and general views about life

"Most Japanese, judging by their responses to scales on happiness, are neither ‘very happy,’ nor ‘very unhappy,’ noted Gallup. “There is a degree of fatalism in their somber mood. Teen’s perspectives on life tend to a sense of nihilism to an alarming degree. A note of hopelessness is found in the responses to a number of questions. And there is little evidence of eternal hope, although a considerable number do believe in some form of life after life.”

On matters of morality, Gallup noted a strong relativistic streak: “Like much of the rest of the world, the Japanese tend to take relativistic views on ethical matters. There is little belief in ‘absolutes,’ and this is true across the all-generational groups. In the ‘hierarchy of crimes,’ those related to economic and family matters far outweigh those related to sexual activity.”

Researchers were also surprised by teen attitudes which reflected an especially pessimistic outlook on life. While 22 percent of U.S. teens in previous Gallup surveys often wondered why they existed, the number for Japanese teens was 85 percent. Similarly, while 76 percent of U.S. teens always see a reason for their being on Earth, only 13 percent of Japanese teens agreed with the statement. A surprisingly high 11 percent of Japanese teens wished they had never been born, a figure that comes in at 3 percent for U.S. teens.*

yeah because lets seee… most traditional religion = people are highly conservative, girls are usually chaste, people are more obedient, respect elders, etc…

and look at Christian nations = abortion, gay people, pornography, prostitution, sex and drugs everywhere, etc…

so, by being “Christian” it allows them to be of a so called different “religion” but thats just a front for most of these peoples immoral behavior.

Why do Muslims always try to say that secularism is Christianity?

Clearly Christianity teaches against abortion, homosexual behavior, pornography, prostitution, drugs, etc.

The problem in the West is not too much Christianity. It’s too little Christianity.

yes i know and thats why i said nations… not Christianity… and i did not try to say secularism is Christianity… i was being ignorant like most people here and now you know how stupid it is.

virtually all the countries in the world that has most populous Christians are countries where all the above mentioned things are rampant… and thats fact…

yes thats because Jesus said : go preach the Gospel and the city that doesnt accept you, leave it and dust off your sandal.

And should i understand that muslim countries are chaste? no prostitution in iran, Egypt, Syria, Maghreb ecc? no drinking in SA? Saudi men don’t leave SA and do “wonders” outside it? Saudi women dont take off their veils as soon as they set foot outside SA? still living in the myth of chaste muslim countries?

Well, at least we have numbers on how many Christians we have in the West because they can openly call themselves Christians and do not face persecution.

How many Christians live in the Muslim world? I am sure many are too afraid to be counted.

Several people who are from Iran and have gone back in the past couple of years to visit family have told me that the teenaged girls there are as “forward” as Western girls. Teenagers like to go to the mountains or other isolated areas and listen to Western music, wear Western clothes and express themselves with the opposite sex in Western ways.

You seem to think you can force all people to behave morally.
God gave us free will. Obviously, there are many people who abuse it.

nowhere did i say Muslim countries are completely chaste… but ocmpared to western ones, yes, they are very chaste…and if you really think being christian gets you killed in a Muslim country, then I feel sorry for your ignorance.

anywyas look at the stats of AIDS in Muslim countries versus Western Countries. enough said.

So, Fr. Santoro wasn’t killed simply because he was Christian?

www.cwnews.com/news/viewstory.cfm?recnum=42255

By the way, Fr. Santoro is what we call in Christianity a “martyr”. He was shot in the back in his church while he was praying. Please notice that a Christian martyr is someone who died for his faith by having someone else commit violence against him. God does not rejoice in the violent death of anyone whom he created here on this earth. What an affront to God to kill 3,000 people at the World Trade Center in His name.

The notion in Islam that martyrdom means doing violence against someone else while killing yourself in the name of Allah is is not martyrdom in the eyes of God. It’s murder and suicide.

And of course Christians are persecuted in Muslim countries:

Just Google Christian persecution by Muslims. There is too much documentation out there to dismiss me as ignorant.

per·se·cute Audio pronunciation of “persecute” ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pûrs-kyt)
tr.v. per·se·cut·ed, per·se·cut·ing, per·se·cutes
  1. To oppress or harass with ill-treatment, especially because of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or beliefs.
  2. To annoy persistently; bother.
you guys should not even talk about persecution. Christian record isn’t exactly that great when it comes to tolerance for other. few people going around killing people of another religion is hardly persecution.
let’s see all the persecutions of Muslims and non Muslims by Christians were usually ordered by a “church” or the “government” while the persecution by Muslims were by individuals.
ex: 1 crazy Muslim kills a priest versus the government of Serbia killing and persecuting every Muslim… hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
and in Nigeria, tons of Muslims are killedby Christians as well.

Are you comparing the AIDS rates between practicing Christians and practicing Muslims or between the entire Muslim world and the entire Western world?

how do you know who is practicing and who is not?
the west have the highest population of Christians…west also have some of thehighest rate of AIDS. Africa has the highest rate of AIDS… African nations with mostly Christian population.
last I checked, more than 3/4ths of the West professes they are Christians.
look at the rate of premarital relations in the West, number of babies born in the West, number of abortions in the West, number of gay people in the West and compare it to Muslim countries.

oh and also if you truly look at number of people who follow and practice Christianity… it is WAY less than most religion in the world.

Yeah, right. Muslims really have it hard in the West. By the way, how many Americans died defending Muslims in the former Yugoslavia again?

in muslim countries you might get killed for it, in secular countries no…in musllim countries you do them secretly, in secular countries no…thats why you don’t see the amount of corruption in muslim countries cuz it is all hush-hush…
and if you really think being christian gets you killed in a Muslim country, then I feel sorry for your ignorance.
it is a fact; Christians are being killed for being Christians, just like Paul said: people will persecute you, thinking they are doing it for God.

and as Jesus said : If they have persecuted me , they will also persecute you

By identification. In the West, if you ask in a poll if someone is Christian they can tell you.

Again, you are comparing “the West” to Islamic states. We have separation of church and state here, remember? You are comparing apples to oranges.

By the way, how many times are you going to insinuate that abortion rates, homosexuality and teenage pregnancy are in harmony with Christian teaching?

Pakistan is not an Islamic State, Bangladesh is not an Islamic State, Most of Middle East is not Islamic state, Indonesia is not an Islamic state, etc… so i have no idea what the hell you are talking about.

In fact the only Muslim theocratic state in the world is Iran which is not even Islamic at all for the most part. Vatican City is also a theocracy… so you are greatly mistaken again with your stupid, false, ignorant information.

Isn’t Islam the state religion in those countries? If so, wouldn’t that make them Islamic states?

I’m not talking about just being the majority religion, but the only religion allowed or the religion established by law.

you still fail to understand that West is secular…if you can’t know who is a practicing Christian then your question is irrelevant…as to gay stuff, heard of Saudi and Gulf gays? a great number.

As to practicing religion, its between a person and God…by your logic, Hindus who practice hinduism are better than Christians and muslims who don’t.
