If it is a fact that if you believe that Jesus lived died and rose again you will have eternal life, why do we need organized religion? This is a question one of my friends proposed to me and I’m not sure how to answer it.
 
It is not a fact that those who believe in Jesus will have eternal life. Faith is a necessary starting point, but we are judged by our actions. We need religion to remind us that faith alone does not grant us eternal life.

read James chapter 2 for starters.

The cross is made of two pieces of wood. The first is vertical representing our relationship with God. The second is horizontal, representing our relationship with one another. Together, we form the Body of Christ with Jesus as the head.
Also look at 1 Corinthian 12. “Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it.”

I’m kind of surprised that a Catholic here would ask that, no offense intended. If Christ had not intended there to be an organized church, he would not have authorized it, which various scripture references show. What is more, it is there that we receive the means of grace - Baptism, Eucharist, confession, hearing the Word, etc.

Because it isn’t enough to just believe. Christ made it clear that the way we receive grace is through the sacraments. The sacraments require a priesthood and active participation of the believers. Priesthood + Sacraments + Active Participation = Organized Religion
 
The flaw in your friend’s reasoning is that he has taken one verse of Scripture (John 3:16) and concluded that that’s all there is to salvation. If that were true, the Bible would fit on an index card. Scripture must be read as a whole. Individual verses aren’t meant to contain an exhaustive totality of the Gospel. We Catholics believe John 3:16 with all our hearts, we just don’t interpret it the way fundamentalists do.

His friend said that. Gamera is right about picking out one verse. Here is what can happen when you do that. The bible says ***“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”. ***If you are verse picking that is all you will see but the bible also says ***“Not everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved but he who does the will of the Father” *** That’s why you can’t go picking verses.

Dear SacredHeartFan,

It is simple. To avoid worshipping the wrong Jesus. You know that many people claim they were from the righteousness, but no one can make sure. I trust the chuch, because the church has sooooo many experts who dedicate their lifetime to search who the real Jesus is.

Yes but he is a protstant (I guess) so he doesn’t like the whole idea of the Catholic Church’s biblical beginings, even though I have given him more than enough logic and proof.

I’m sorry, I misunderstood the quote. If he is so oppositional to Catholic teaching, may I suggest you give him some “protestant” proof. Tell him to read the Lutheran confessions, or some other reformation era church’s writings that also confirm the importance of organized religion. As I said , it is where we receive the means of grace, word and sacrament. And some of the things others have said here.

Hi

First I would like to correct the sentence written by you. I don’t agree that Jesus lived died and rose again as the ProtestantsCatholics generally narrate .

Jesus lived; I do agree.
Jesus died a cursed death on Cross; I don’t agree with it.
Jesus rose again from the dead; in my opinion, Jesus never died on Cross, so there is no question of his rising again.
Yes, he died peacefully a respectful death in India and was exalted to heaven by the mercy of GodAllahYHWH as do all the Messengers of GodAllahYHWH.

Kindly remember the questening of Jesus by GodAllahYHWH.
