Christmas and Friday penance

First, Merry Christmas to all of you!!

I was wondering since I don’t eat meat on Fridays as my penance, if it would be ok if I ate meat this Christmas since it’s on a Friday this year. I know most of the meals tomorrow my mom and at my uncle’s house will have meat.
 
Friday penance doesn’t apply to Solemnities, per canon 1251.
 
I also abstain from meat on Fridays, but I ate
a turkey dinner LAST Friday on the 18th of Dec.
I guess I will have to have a dispensation from
the priest!! I know it is Okay to eat meat TODAY,
since it is a Solemnity, how about New Year’s
Day, is it a Solemnity?
 
Yes, January 1st is the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God.

I wasn’t aware it’s possible to get a dispensation from something after the fact :hmmm:

It was, in the General Roman Calendar, for about 400 years (and still is in the Eastern Orthodox Church). That changed with the calendar revision of 1960. My OF Sunday missal for the current liturgical year calls January 1st the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. My EF missal (copyright 2010) refers to this day as the Feast of the Circumcision of Our Lord and Octave of the Nativity.

In 1969 the October 11 feast of **The Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary **was moved to January 1 and renamed it Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. The Gospel on that day mentions the circumcision (Luke 2:16-21).
