While reading the instructions for the Divine Office it seems to state that if I go to Midnight Mass and pray Matins (office of readings) then I am not required to pray compline (Night Prayer)? I am wondering if I can then pray Matins say at 11:30pm just before Mass? Or if I need to pray Matins after Mass? I would prefer to pray it in the Church, but my pastor will be ready for bed and will be running around locking up the church as soon as Mass has ended. So am I to pray Matins before Midnight Mass or after Midnight Mass?

Firstly are you obligated to say the Office (including Matins/OOR) each day?

Secondly are we talking actual OOR (which can be said any time of day) or Matins?

As long as you have finished with Evening Prayer, you may pray the Office of Readings (from which I infer: You may do so prior to Mass at midnight)
  1. Without prejudice to the regulations just given, the office of readings may be recited at any hour of the day, even during the night hours of the previous day, after evening prayer has been said.

Office of Readings and Matins are the same thing if it’s the 1976 Liturgy of the Hours, which I take it that it is from reading Psalm’s post.

The answer to Psalm’s question is found in the General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours:

215. On Christmas night it is fitting that a solemn vigil, using the Office of Readings, should be celebrated before Mass. Night prayer is not said by those who are present at this vigil.

You may say the OOR before Midnight Mass, but unless it’s a solemn vigil where it’s said by the priest(s) and the congregation, you would still say Night prayer.

I hope this helps.
